Slash and Betty White team up with Watertown ad agency to promote Los Angeles Zoo exhibit

2012 FEBRUARY 10

Betty White has shown up in plenty of unusual TV commercials over the last few years. But there hasn?t been one yet in which she has shared screen time with Slash. The iconic actress will do exactly that in TV ads that will start running during the next month in the Los Angeles area. She?ll be hanging with the hirsute guitarist, known for his work in Guns N? Roses and Velvet Revolver, as well as the scaly inhabitants of the new exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo.

When Gary Greenberg heard that both White and Slash were members of the nonprofit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association?s board of trustees, he knew he had to figure out a way to get them in a commercial together. Greenberg became involved in the project on behalf of Watertown ad agency Allen & Gerritsen, where he?s the chief creative officer.

A&G designed an entire campaign to hype the new LAIR exhibit (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates and Reptiles). The billboards and print ads will feature the creatures, not the celebrities.

But the pairing of White and Slash was too good to resist when it came to TV ads. They make an interesting visual juxtaposition, Greenberg says, as well as a contrast in personalities. They are already friends from their work with the zoo association, he says, and shared an obvious chemistry on the set when the video was shot last month at the zoo.

Greenberg says the commercials were written and designed by himself, as well as A&G colleagues Eivind Ueland, George Koukkos and Ryan Raulie.
Greenberg says the ads are still in post-production, here in Massachusetts, and he didn?t want to give away too much about the storyline in the 30-second spots. White and Slash are talking to each other at the zoo, checking out the desert frogs and blood pythons. Greenberg says they communicate with the critters. While he won?t explain exactly how that happens, he promises there won?t be any talking geckos in this reptile exhibit.

I think "Slash teams up with Betty White" is up there with the most bizarre sentences I have ever read.

Slash and Betty are good friends. They met a few years ago and worked together when they saved Billy the elephant's home at the LA ZOO. They both also serve as board members for the LA Zoo.
