Anyways, sorry to hear that. I think the fact that GN'R toured themselves into the ground by '93 and were essentially a fractured band had more to do with their lack of popularity than the "grunge" era forcing them out.

I agree.  Aerosmith had their greatest commercial success in 1994 and 1995 with"Get a Grip", Metallica was also hugely successful, there is no doubt in my mind if GNR put out a record in 96 or so it would have done well.  There was a market for blues based hard rock still at that time.

But the only problem I have with what you said is that you are blaming Slash for it somehow.  Slash put out a platinum solo album in 1995, I can't really see how he solely brought the bands popularity down.

The biggest problem in my opinion was whatever was going on behind the scenes, and then they took themselves out of the spotlight.  So while other bands from the 80's disappeared due to lack of sales, GNR disappeared because they decided to, leaving the average music fan to think they went down with the rest of the bands from that era.  Which was of course false.

Note:  Hootie and The Blowfish were massively popular around this time, there was obviously something wrong with peoples opinions on music during that time.

To boot, the Faith No More/Metallica/GnR stadium tour sold HUGE, selling out pretty much every show.  Sure, it was a trifecta....but trust me, people weren't walking out during the LONG set change between Metallica and GnR.

That qualification says pretty much everything that needs to be said. 

Counterculture Flannel invaded en masse in the mid-90's, really.  Heavy Metal/Hard Rock/Grunge played tug of war through the early 90's.

GnR was the Grunge movements poster boy for excess and everything that was wrong with music (not to mention the Nirvana/Gnr dustups).  If you were listening to what the flannel mob was saying, it's coloring your perception.   Because UYI sold well throughout the early part of the decade, and GnR continued to tour and sell out arenas all over the country (and the world).

Spaghetti incident (late '93) was the beginning of the end (and the "end" of the end was Sympathy for the Devil on the Interview with a Vampire soundtrack).

They didn't only take themselves out of the limelight. They also spent that time with literally the only news leaking through being "we can't agree on the music", "{insert name here} has left the band", and the bewildering when you listen to Chinese Democracy, "Axl wants to turn the band into Nine Inch Nails". It's not difficult to see how they could become a punchline with years of nothing but that.

On the other hand, I feel that when the band eventually became active again, and people started talking about them again, it became okay to like them once more. Even if it was, "Yeah, Guns N' Roses are good, but it's crap without Slash" and all of that other stuff, it's a lot more than what people would have said just a couple of years before that. A lot of the stuff in the press about what they were up to wasn't positive still, but I think the fact that they were doing anything at all went a long way to making sure that the name was once again relevant by the time it came for the Hall Of Fame to consider them. If we were still in a state of limbo, I very much doubt this thread would exist, because they'd probably be considered just another short-lived band that was big for a few years and then disappeared (no matter how inaccurate any of us would consider that).
