After watching the vids, I have no words for Axl's vocals on Civil War.

It's like listening to the studio version.

kinda, but just with his newer un-raspy helium voice.
nice to see this song coming back! though Axl planed this in 12/2008 already - that he wanted to do "Estranged and Civil War probably somewhere"....3 years later: here we go!!

What's the point comparing with performances from 20 years ago?

I'm a BIG fan of Frank's drumming. When I listened to Civil War, I just smiled real wide listening to the little things he added here and there.

Frank is just a beast on the drums!

I AGREE!!!! Everyone praises the guitarist or even Tommy... But, Frank, imo, does the best in the songs. Ive always tought Matt "slowed" down most songs. Steven kept it up... Just like Frank does now...

Fuckin' nit-pickin' critics. Who gives a fuck if he sang it without the same "rasp" of 20 years ago.

Because he doesn't have the same rasp in any song, the way he did 20 years ago, should he pack it up and stay home??

Shut the fuck up already!

I'm glad there are far more appreciative "fans" who are still "on a high" that they brought Civil War back.

Thanks Axl for listening to us. We asked for Estranged, we called for it.....we begged......and you delivered.

And now, Civil war!!! Thank you!

- rasp: people are just wondering, because he had the rasp much more in previous tours (exspecially 2006). and when people say this version is like listening to the studio version they definately need some ear washing as his voice clearly sounds higher right now (in this 12/04/2011 performance). that doesnt make it more bad, just different.
- and no, Estranged and Civil War never werent the fans' request in the 1st place. Axl's exact words about possible old Guns' songs live editions said in his online chats 12/2008 were "Estranged and Civil War probably somewhere."

I'm astounded by the people who say his voice sounds "higher," but have no idea that what they're saying completely undermines their own credibility. If he was singing higher, he'd be changing the melody, by definition. He's not.

I think he sounds great. How would it help this song sound better if he beat his voice up while singing it? Stop living in 1992.

Anyone with a critique of Axl's vocals on Civil War needs to do this for me;

Record a song, don't sing it for 18 years, walk out in front of 10,000 people and sing it for the first time since then, have your friend stand 100 feet away recording it with a cell phone, put a huge crowd between you and your friend, then upload that performance to YouTube and we'll start the discussion over.

ok, requiem156, you somehow felt offended and are now playing the definiton-smart-ass-game to bash those objective thoughts. higher voice, helium voice, un-raspy voice, not-so-strong-voice, more-singing-voice, newer voice....however people call it, it definately sounds different and i'm you sure you got that point.

"stop living in 1992"? first off: there is no need to tell people what to do. this often helps in real life aswell by the way Wink
second....this 12/04 is the first live version since 1993. off course people do compare that and to the first studio release in 1990 ("Nobody's Child") or UYI2. and they have all their rights to do so.

"How would it help this song sound better if he beat his voice up while singing it?"
uhm, i think it helped the studio version. thats the version we all fell in love, huh?

and his voice sounds very different to that. again, this doesnt make this live version more bad, i've never said that. i actually like this, i did listen to it like 15 times today!

@russtcb:
there are a few decent NON-cellphone recordings of it, the sound is pretty decent on it. we hopefully get external GOOD audio within the next weeks!

« Reply #219 on: December 06, 2011, 02:40:23 PM »

Anyone who says Axl is not singing with rasp on this tour obviously does not understand what rasp is. If you want to hear a version of "Civil War" without rasp then listen to Myles Kennedy's take on the song. I happen to think Myles does a decent job but he is a singer, who, for whatever reason chooses to never use rasp on his voice.  As far as Axl goes I think it's important to understand that Axl is fundamentally a different singer than he was in 1992. He uses far more technique nowadays in his approach and IMHO sounds better for it. Back in the day he used to just belt with little or no technique because he could.  The end result was that he had more rasp on his voice because he was basically justy shredding his throat with reckless abandon.  A perfect example of this would be the Tokyo '92 SCOM. His voice was used and abused and sure he had tons of rasp, but also sounded terrible. Nowadays he's a lot more technical about what type of voice he uses at certain points in songs. And I know with Axl that everyone loves to concentrate on his high voice, but has anyone noticed that his low voice is far more powerful and controlled than at any time with "Old Guns?" A good example of this is how he sings "It's So Easy" and "Shackler's Revenge" these days. Also keep in mind that almost everything he sang with "Old Guns" was way easier and more straightforward than the "Chinese Democracy" vocal melodies.  So in conclusion Axl is definitely using rasp on this tour...it's just a different kind of rasp because it's coming from a different technical approach.
