Sebastian Bach claims that Slash and Duff picked the wrong guy in ?junkie? Weiland and that the band would still be together if he was the frontman
September 14, 2011
Sebastian Bach claims Velvet Revolver would still be together had they handed him the frontman role instead of choosing Scott Weiland.
The ex-Skid Row singer, now fronting a solo-band, was rumoured to be on the shortlist for the rock supergroup and he admits he did work with Slash and Duff McKagan on a handful of songs.
But Bach says a need to pay his bills took him away from the band and ultimately resulted in Weiland getting the gig.
Speaking to Sleaze Roxx Bach said: ?It wasn?t an audition (with Slash and Duff in Velvet Revolver). I didn?t walk in and sing some songs ? it wasn?t like that. I worked with them for a month or a little over.
?The guys gave me five songs with no vocals so I wrote lyrics and melodies and then we went into the studio to record it. So you see it was a little more than an audition. I still have those songs on my iPod.
?What happened was that I was in the play ?Jesus Christ Superstar?, on a national tour, they were paying me and Velvet Revolver was not. I had to take care of my family so I went on the road with ?Jesus Christ Superstar.?
?They chose Scott Weiland, so they put their faith in a heroin addict. How did that work out for them? I would put my faith in a drug addict alright! (laughs) I might drink a little bit of wine, and on occasion stain my teeth, but that?s it!
?Listen, if they had picked me we?d probably still be together right now. I?m a musician like them ? I?m not a junkie and not into that kind of thing. So they don?t have a singer and I have a new album. Let?s rock! (laughs).?

hahaha its hard to argue with what he said, it is the truth. However im not sure VR would have been as popular without Scott, that brought 2 bands fan bases together.

They would not still be together. They would've flopped after the first record. You think Slash & Duff would allow their legendary reputation to be tarnished like that?

Funny.
Because playing with the Best Buy band is so much cooler?
And the whole VR soap opera hasn't done that?

Who cares if they'd have still been together with him singing? They would've sucked with him singing. The "more than an audition" was the actual audition process that they did with
everyone
they considered. It was an audition, Bas. Live with it.
Also, considering they're all addicts themselves, I don't think they're in any position to judge Scott.

Is there really any purpose in you coming on this part of the site? You troll your way through topics on here to get digs in on these guys the same way idiots who talk about Guns not being a real band because Axl is the only original left do. Give it a rest. You hate Slash. I think everyone gets that.
Nothing to see here.

I think they did just fine with Scott.
Set Me Free, Slither and Fall To Pieces were Huge hits and Contraband sold 2 million in the US and they won a grammy
Sebastian is one of my favorite frontmen of all time but I'm sure they have no regrets even if it ended bad with Scott.
Plus he completely contradicts himself.. He says they picked wrong singer but then goes on to act like it was he who turned them down to do Jesus Chris Superstar.... .Which was it?

Jeez, Bas. It sounds like a flippin' audition to me. And they didn't pick ya'. Get over yourself. Seems like I remember a statement from someone, around that time, that they didn't pick him because it sounded like Skid Row meets GnR, something like that (I can't find the statement or who said it or exactly what it was, but it was that gist).
He's just jealous and holds a grudge because he wasn't chosen.

yeah I am big fan of Bach, but I would not have liked him in VR. "Contraband" was a very exciting album, that really took the hard rock world by storm, the energy in those early shows was ridiculous! Unfortunately they followed it up with that pile of shit "Libertad", which took the term "sophmore slump" to a whole new level. I imagine anything they did with Bach would have been worse than that, Bach is a metal singer, always has been, since the Skid Row days, his style wouldnt have fit. He should just stick to his solo records, cause they really rock.

Slash, Duff, Gilby, Sorum, and a few other people got together last week for a charity gig in NYC.

I was confused by that, too... after all, it was Guns N' Roses who went into "partnership" with Best Buy to release an album.
Not sure what that charity gig had to do with Best Buy, but criticising musicians for playing a charity gig is pretty fucking low, even if you don't like them.

I believe that the Best Buy comment had to do with Velvet Revolver not being a real band but more a manufactured product created to sell records. It didn't have anything to do with any recent benefit concert, it has to do with VR being contrived commercial music made up of members from two previously successful bands whose sole purpose is to squeeze a few more drops of cash out of the bands fan bases. That was my interpretation of the comment, and I thought it was pretty funny because it is true to a certain degree, how else can you explain Libertad?

I honestly think they (well, Scott, Duff and Matt at least... Dave seemed to be going through the motions, and Slash sounded like he didn't give a shit at all) had the best intentions for Libertad. Other than She Builds Quick Machines, the music didn't seem as commercial as most of the stuff on Contraband. But whereas Contraband was commercial, it was also awesome. On Libertad they tried something a bit different, and failed (though there were some good tracks). I also believe that when they first formed the entire band was serious about it, doing something new together, etc. Slash included. You could tell on Contraband that they were hungry to make great music together again. I'd say it was the label who decided to market it as a manufactured product designed to drain some cash from the GN'R/STP legacies... but something happened when they went on the road with each other. I won't speculate as to what it is, but it became obvious that they weren't getting along with each other by the time they ended touring behind Contraband. And then in the end, the money was the only reason Slash and Scott was there. (Yeah, I think it's possible for Scott to only be there for the money
and
care about the music he produces whilst he's there).
Regardless of the intentions, though... bringing up Best Buy on a GN'R site to insult another band is a bit of a silly move.

I thought he meant the charity gig was the Best Buy band because it was held at the Best Buy Theater in NYC.
