I'm Ron Burgundy?

WWW
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:52:30 PM »

Ron was a guest on Eddie Trunk's Sirius/XM show last night and sat in for the entire 4 hour show.

I'll try to give a rundown of the interview here (or at least the parts I find interesting).  This is the first 3 hours, haven't listened to the last hour yet.

Eddie asked Ron if Axl's okay with his beard and Ron said that Axl has to put up with a lot of shit with Ron and his beard is real low on the list.  He then made a plea to Axl that if he didn't like his beard that he'd shave it, IF Axl shaved his mustache.

Eddie talked about Richard joining Thin Lizzy and Ron said how excited Richard was about the gig.  Eddie also commented how Vivian Campbell wasn't doing the Thin Lizzy gig for money, but for the love of it.  Eddie said that Richard had sent Scott Gorham a tape of him playing "Black Rose", and he was blown away.  Ron says that Richard is the MOST TALENTED musician in the band.  Eddie talked about how Thin Lizzy doesn't do well touring in the US because its not the original band, or at least not without Phil (sound familiar?).

Eddie asked Ron how Richard's role in Thin Lizzy effected GNR, and he took his usual stance of "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it".  They talked about the fact that everyone in the band is free to do whatever they choose as far as side projects, until there's business to attend to on the GNR end.

Eddie told Ron he wanted to talk to him about Duff joining GNR onstage, and Ron hesitated saying he'd rather not talk about things like GNR business, etc.  Eddie was surprised that Ron wouldn't want to talk about THAT though, and Ron finally agreed he'd discuss it after they got back from a break (music).

Coming out of the break, Eddie talked about Mike Portnoy and Dream Theater and what a tough time he was going through with DT fans and that whole situation.  Eddie compared it to the GNR situation in the respect that each band have fanatical fans that pick things apart, read into things, and come to their own conclusions.

Finally they got back to the Duff bit.  Ron explained how he doesn't like talking about GNR in general because people make a big deal out of the smallest thing and they get twisted into untruths.  Eddie sympathized and said it happens to him, and anyone with any fame, all the time.

Ron talked about the Guitar magazine interview recently that was in French and it was improperly translated.  Saying he found him (Axl) tiresome, and he NEVER said that.

Back to Duff.  Jen (Ron's wife) said she had posted on facebook that she was heading to London, and Duff's wife Susan saw that and said that they were going to London too.  Then they ended up staying in the same hotel and Ron felt that Duff just wanted to hang out, but he ended up joining them onstage.  That was about as far as Ron wanted to go on the subject, and Eddie did say that Duff spoke about the incident on an upcoming episode of "That Metal Show".

Ron talked about his recent solo work and how he releases it on his website.  Different mixes, just drums, vocals, guitars, so you can make your own mixes.  He said he HATES "selling" stuff, but he did his best sales pitch before Eddie played "Invisible".

Eddie jokingly asked Ron if there's an "Axl" phone that when it rings, he knows it's time for GNR to reconvene.  Ron did explain that they were headlining Rock in Rio in October and they'd see if things get booked before then.

The first caller (Rocky) ripped into Ron for saying NOTHING about Guns N' Roses and called him a bore.  Eddie defended Ron by saying he came on the show to talk about his solo work and that there's not much to talk about GNR right now because there's not much going on.  Ron said he'd be happy to talk about things that HAPPENED in GNR, but not what might or might not happen.  He said he wasn't going to put stuff out there that wasn't 100% going to happen because if it doesn't happen he'll feel the wrath from that.  Ron said that Axl started the band 25 years ago and he has been in the band for 5 years so it would be disrespectful for him to announce GNR business or speak on those matters unless it was definite.  Rocky did say he enjoyed "Invisible" though.  And for the PC police, Ron was respectful to the caller and didn't go off on him at all.

Ron talked about playing in Vegas in 2006 (prompted by a tweet he received) and said it was great to play in such a small, intimate setting.  He said the same thing about the acoustic shows they played.

Ron "reminded" Eddie that he listed 3 songs off of "Chinese Democracy" in his GNR playlist in his book "Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal".  Just a brief explanation, Eddie chose 10 songs or so from classic bands that weren't necessarily the "hits", that he would rate as his favorites.  From "Chinese Democracy" he chose the title track, "Better", and "Riad and the Bedouins".

Eddie played Ron's cover of "Strawberry Fields Forever", even though Ron was unsure how the metal audience would receive it.  Then afterwards he played "Better".

I'm so happy that Ron met up with Eddie again, it's been too long since the last time. What would have made it even better, if Savage Animal - Sebastian Bach was there too. There have been a few epic interviews involving Ron, Baz and Eddie.  Grin
