Loads of singers' voices go through different stages, and it generally does happen every 2-3 years. That's what I was saying about Rio 2001 and also Mexico 2007, these are fine example of Axl having a different tone of voice, simply because it had been a while since those vocal chords had been used extensively.

Just look at Toshi from X Japan, he has gone through periods when singing the simplest of songs was a huge strain on his voice, and it sounded very high pitched. This is the same for every singer, it's just a matter of warming up.

Thank god we have a vocal expert (and a REAL FAN!) here to guide us through these difficult times.

Thank God we have some people like you who look for the bad in everything, who critisize everything they can and who only come out the woodwork to moan and complain. I don't get why people like you post on boards, because you never seem to be having a good time, just bitching and whining.

Just because I choose to look at the positives, you don't like it. And I've explained in detail why Axl couldn't see the lyrics on the monitors, and why maybe Axls' voice sounded a little different, to the usual weathered concert voice, and still you don't like it.

Jesus dude, get the fuck off the site if all you going to do, is moan and complain.  Tongue

I'm surprised that after reading my posts, that's what you took away from them. I'm not complaining about anything. I'm just curious about what's going on with Axl. This is a discussion board, is it not?

Case in point; Shout With The Devil >>> Dr.Feelgood...huge diference in vocals.

God yes. It practically doesn't sound like the same guy singing Kickstart My Heart vs Looks That Kill.

it wasnt a horrible performance. The band sounded great!!! and Axl had his moments. And of course Estranged was a highlight.

that being said, being an Axl fanatic and seeing countless performances both live and just watching live on the internet or otherwise, there was clearly something up with him the other night. He exumed none of the charisma or stage presence that has made him one of the greatest frontmen of all time except for a few brief instances. his whole vibe seemed very weird. from forgetting verses and lyrics (which he rarely ever does) to the way he even wore his clothes. I have never seen Axl have his leather jacket zipped up and he had all his jackets zipped up for the whole show, seems weird to me. Granted it was probably cold from the rain, but the other guys in the band were in tshirts. i dont ever harp on his appearance, but it just seemed odd to me.

His mood was in and out. There were some moments of his funny charm and then his pissed off antics, which is normal for him but....i have never seen Axl look like he did at the beginning of Heaven's Door, or the beginning of Paradise City with that blank stare and look of utter defeat. He usually exumes a presence with such confindence. it was just really hard to watch and i felt bad for the guy. There was this feeling of not knowing what was gonna happen next, but in a bad way. not the usual bad ass Axl way.

As for his voice, we all know he doesnt rehearse and the first shows are pretty hit or miss. He wasnt absolutely terrible. But he should of maybe showed up at a few rehearsals at least, like he did for the Hammerstein shows. You think with how big this show was, not just cause of it being Rio and playing for 200,000 people, but because it was going to be great promotion for US tour coming up with it being broadcasted on youtube he would have wanted to make sure his voice was in good condition.

Now i know it was raining, and that does have a major affect on vocal chords. Singing in the cold is definitely NOT good for a singer...so i do have mucho respect for Axl gettin up there and singing for 2 and half hours under those conditions. Big ups!! and we also know how wet the stage was, there were literally puddles and we all know how much Axl moves around, so that definitely hindered his performance.

Idk im not worried about the upcoming tour, i think he's gonna bounce back and its gonna be great!! But there was definitely a weird vibe to this show that i have never seen before, especially with Axl.

thats just my two cents. hope it makes sense. ha.

well, i think honestly the rain had a lot to do with that... He couldn't really do his normal dance/moving routine cause a fall/injury would derail the entire tour.. so better to play it a little safer than possibly suffer a tour ending injury.

The vocal thing reminded me at times of the VMA's... def not the powerful/rasp of the 2010 shows but hopefully it works its way back with more shows etc.

From what I saw on the Youtube videos, it didn't seem like Axl or the rest of crew were on target at Rio. There were plenty of mistakes like the solo  in "Welcome to the  Jungle" or lyrics not being remember in "Patience". Axl didn't seem like himself that nite judging from the performance. I  think the boys will be ok though as the tour gets rolling. I'm looking forward to seeing them.

yeah the wetness definitely hindered his stage/physical performance, and i totally understand that. and like i said, singing in the rain is not a good thing for vocalists, especially people who have a range like Axl. so that im not really harping on. and believe me im one of the biggest defenders of Axl in the world, i always stick for him. so dont take my previous post as me coming out of the woodwork to complain (not speaking towards you.) and you can read all my previous posts, i never have.

what im concerned about was Axl's spirits, like i said he just looked utterly defeated in his eyes at points, and thats something ive never seen Axl portray. even in the worst of situations at shows. very uncharacteristic for him. and maybe it had to do with him forgetting the words, but i have a feeling it was more than that.

And in all honesty, i dont think the teleprompters were an issue. I never see Axl look at those anyway, theyre just kinda there. I've seen GN'R front row at Hammerstein and Worcester in '06 and front row in Sturgis '10 and I never saw him look at them. Even on old bootlegs stemming back from the orginal lineup, he never actually really used them.

Idk it was just a weird night all around and I just hope Axl is okay, as a genuine fan. That being said, i know he will bounce back and tear up South America and the US on the upcoming tours!!!

keep in mind he couldnt run/move a lot cause of the rain, this even gave him more time to focus on his singing....he said so himself in the beginning aswell, right after CD.
and speaking of being cold.....watch the Rock Am Ring 2006 Proshot and how the band members did breathe fog there cause of being so cold at night. i was there right in front and THAT really was cold.

I think that was more a hindrance, as when he does get able to run around, his voice gets stronger, I think the singing and moving pushes his adrenaline. JMO

I totally agree. I still am impressed that the band performed so great in such bad conditions. I am actually kind of surprised that the show wasn't cancelled, if anybody in the audience had been injured there would have been some serious liability issues for the promoters. Did you guys hear about that stage collapse in Indiana from the wind. There are some major lawsuits going on now.
I finally saw PARADISE CITY and I don't think Axl looks defeated, just disappointed. He wanted to give his best, and in his eyes I saw that he felt that his best just wasn't good enough. It had nothing to do with lack of preparation. I think he lost a liittle of his MOJO because he had to play it safe to keep from falling in all those puddles. He wanted to give his usual 110% and the weather conditions prevented him from doing that. Axl may be a rock god, but even he can't control the weather.
I am appalled by the negativity that is being posted on the internet about this show. If Axl were such a spoiled brat prima donna he would have walked off the stage when he splashed thru his first pudde.

I don't see why everyone is up in arms about ?  Axl missed a little bit of NR, Patience.  It's not like he sat on the piano and did a instrumental until the two guitar solo's came.   I watched the entire stream, and I was pleased with the performance.  Tired of reading all of the negative shit about Axl and the band... it get's really old after a while.  This band is on top of it's form and if you don't like it ! go to that top hat guy's message board.

Oh, what a mature comment.  Roll Eyes I'm NOT being negative toward Axl or the band, just stating a simple fact: RIR wasn't their best performance.

I have to admit I felt sorry for Axl when I saw that blank stare in his eyes. He looked so sad and utterly depressed. Maybe he felt like he had let his fans down and that made him sad? Cheer up Axl, you'll do better next time. Smiley

like on vma02 ?
come on, now the excuse for his weak voice performance is rain/coldness (compare to Rock Am Ring06 !!) and NOT moving much? eh....

The actual name of the song is Baba O' Riley. It was featured on The Who's "Who's Next" album in 1971 and also plays as the theme music for CSI New York. Two more Who songs are also used for CSI themes, Won't Get Fooled Again for CSI Miami and Who Are You for the original CSI Las Vegas.

I would say that he was having some serious problems with his high range in this clip. No ability to pull back the rasp.

He's a better singer in terms of technique now than he was then. I think something weird was going on the other night.
I don't know about that, I think he finds it difficult to put his signature rasp into his vocals at times. To me that's the coolest part of Axl's singing. That's what I always found so unique in his voice. Other guys have gravelly and screechy voices but when Axl's on form, his voice slices through anything like nobody else. At this show you could hear it sometimes but not as much. Remeber when Axl first made a comeback he sounded like he was on helium. I could hear elements of that creeping back. Anyway, he'll be back on form after a couple of shows, I know he will.
