i was, and i think Serp too, about the Live From The Jungle Promo.....
And, i was also asking about those mini lp's, but looking at the images closer, they must all be just paper. How big are they? CD case size?
It does not need the obi strip to be a promo. A great example of this would be the black and white GNR EP released in Japan. There never was an obi strip with this release. However, every other Guns N Roses Japanese release that I know of (for cds and 12" records anyway) had an obi strip originally. But even if the obi strip was lost/destroyed it doesn't mean it's not a promo anymore. It's just more valuable from a collecting standpoint if it still has the original obi strip.
It also does not need the sticker to be a promo. Most promo items from Japan that I know of do/did have the sticker. But it could have been taken off by someone or it could have rubbed off over time. But no matter what, the cd and/or record should be marked in some way to indicate that it's a promo item. Now in the case of my cd take a look at the center of the cd (near the hole). Those characters you see there are the Kana/Hiragana (a version of Japanese) characters for the word sample. Now look at the sticker. The 3 characters on the left are the Kanji/Romaji (another version of Japanese) characters for the word sample. The 3 characters below the numbers are the Kanji/Romaji characters for the phrase "not for sale".
Yeah the mini LPs are really cool because they have all the same stuff from the original releases just in cd size. The inserts are on medium stock cardboard and are cd size yes. As you can see from the photos they even have the stickers from the original releases and the same obi strips as the original releases. Most of the nes you see on eBay are the regular releases and not the promo cds - once again, look at the center of the cds (for most of them, some are just stamped).
