Well since this was posted on the official GN'R twitter I will share this piece of information.

A few years ago I emailed Chris Pitman asking about the origins of the intro music used on the 2006 tour. I even told him I had heard Robin Finck recommended it from a film, that was a rumour I had heard.

He confirmed to me that it was part of an unreleased GN'R song, and that I would notice it sometime in the future. He never told me what song, so it being The General is news to me as much as everyone else.

The reason why I never told anyone about this for 2 years is purely because it was something Chris told me privately in a response to my email. I hope Chris knows I kept this to myself, and the reason I am telling you guys now, is purely because of the official GN'R twitter post.

So yes, the intro is part of an unreleased GN'R song, and judging by the GN'R twitter, it's The General. I can't wait to hear this, I have always loved that intro since 2006.  Smiley

Chris was asked on facebook about 'The General' and he mentioned that it was buried under the right arm of the sphinx along with 'Silkworms'. So lets not get hopes up.

Also, the European leg had a different part of this intro (at least I belive its the same song, as I heard in one YouTube video the "new one" leading to this "old one"). Smiley

Edit: Im on my iPhone so I couldnt get the actual link because it was embeded, but check the Chinese Democracy video on this (always awesome) blog and listen to the different part of the intro I mentioned:

Definitely sounds like parts of the same piece.

Yeah, that leads me to think that this is not just an intro of the actual song, but more an arrangement (either made specially for the shows or just one of the orchestral layers). Smiley

Great find indeed....any creative (wo)men around here who can use this track to make a rocker from this song...

I think it's great already...but a bit hard to imagine in what kinda direction this will go....

Anyone around who can make it a real GNR song ?  ok

"The General" Used as Live Intro for 4+ Years

"Leave Me Alone," "Seven," and "The General" could also feature on the new album. These three A-listed songs were worked on by Marco Beltrami, especially "Seven," which Marco deems as the best of the three songs. It has also been reported that Marco worked on a fourth track, "Thyme." However, this song was not worked on subsequent to Marco's work in October 2002. (Jeff Leeds)

Last year Brain had this song called "The General" that was really cool... (Dizzy Reed)

One of my favorite songs is this song called "The General, which is ... by far the heaviest metal tune I think ive ever heard Axl do, this slow, grinding riff with these high, piercing vocals, screaming vocals. [Axl] goes, "well, this comes out on the third record. It relates to this song, it's a trilogy, this goes with this lyrically." (Sebastian Bach)

[Sebastian Bach] says Rose told him that a slow, grinding track called "The General" is the sequel to "Estranged," that goes to the parable that Del James wrote of the trilogy. (Rolling Stone)

CD.COM: Could you tells us more about "The General"?

Axl Rose: You may have heard parts of it somewhere.

I too love this piece of music, I couldn't believe it when Chris told me it was an actual GN'R song. I think people are on the right track, the intro music that has been prominently played during the recent tours. Is the same piece that was played in 2006, but maybe it's from a different point in the track.

I love this and can't wait to hear it.  Grin

I just had to chuckle to myself because at the Manchester show I was expecting this to be the intro music. So the lights go out and Blue Moon is played by the Marcels.

When talking about The General, intro n stuff..

I think this is a different intro from what we have heard before? Or is it the same as in the Australia show?

Yes that is the intro we are talking about, many believe on this forum that it is from the same piece of music that the 2006 intro was from. So if this is an unreleased song, the 2006 intro and the 2010 intro are probably just different points in the song, but it is the same piece of music regardless I feel.

I wonder who did the orchestration - Marco Beltrami, Paul Buckmaster or even Pitman...

Edit: love the cheerful antecipation before DJ's guitar intro. It brings me a lot of memories. Smiley
