Here Today...

« on: September 19, 2010, 07:17:01 AM »

The UYI set has just had it's "19th Anniversary" last week..It has been disregarded in many articles and conversations regarding Axl and GN'R..Even in the live set GN'R only play 4 songs from the set, w/ 2 of them being covers!! I understand because of simularities in style w/ too many other songs that the classic Etranged has been ignored on the recent tour. But c'mon throw a couple UYI songs into the set list..Maybe a melody or a rotating song or 2..I know it would be tough taking LALD out (Axl sings it as though he wrote it) and the Dylan style version o' KOHD they have been playing but give me some originals like Civil War, a little Perfect Crime, Locomotive backed by Nightrain, Pretty Tied Up, Right Next Door to Hell, Bad Obsession, and a personal favorite Don't Damn Me!!

The band rehearsed Perfect Crime back in 2006, but that never got played.

I wouldn't mind seeing more UYI tracks get played either, but there's got to be a reason they're not playing any more.  And I guess we just have to respect whatever reason that may be.

I would like to hear more UYI tracks as well, but with this being the Chinese Democracy tour, the band probably wants to give more focus to the new songs and the simple reason might be that there isn't space in the set list for too many UYI songs.

I don't know, Civil War and Estranged could be good (although Locomotive and Coma would make me cream). But I just don't know why they always ignored such an awesome rocker like Don't Damn Me. Sad

Top 5 UYI adds for me, no particular order:
1. Don't Cry
2. Dead Horse
3. Estranged
4. Pretty Tied Up
5. Civil War

Because these songs (other than Don't Cry on a blue moon), haven't been played in so long, anyone of them would get a huge positive reaction no matter where they play.  Would be great if they added 1 or 2 and rotated through different songs at different shows.

I'm kinda surprised '14 years' is in the top 5 of all time favorite songs (after 40 votes or so)

http://www.setlist.fm/stats/average-setlist/guns-n-roses-7bd69e24.html?tour=Chinese+Democracy+Rehearsals they played a lot of UYI material here but practically none of it is played live those are 2 great albums and i hope that if they picked 5 songs they would play

1. Estranged
2. Don't Damn Me
3. Don't Cry (Alternate Lyrics)
4. Coma
5. Civil War

then again Axl said in 12/2008 that he would (at least) like to play Civil War and Estranged "somewhere", still didnt happen yet.
so what has being played from illusions since the 2001 comeback? let's take a look:

Use Your Illusion 1:
1.    "Right Next Door to Hell"
2.    "Dust N' Bones"
3.    "Live and Let Die" (Wings cover)
4.    "Don't Cry" (original version)
5.    "Perfect Crime"
6.    "You Ain't the First"
7.    "Bad Obsession"
8.    "Back Off Bitch"
9.    "Double Talkin' Jive"
10.    "November Rain"
11.    "The Garden" (feat. Alice Cooper)
12.    "Garden of Eden"
13.    "Don't Damn Me"
14.    "Bad Apples"
15.    "Dead Horse"
16.    "Coma"

Use Your Illusion 2:
1.    "Civil War"
2.    "14 Years"
3.    "Yesterdays"
4.    "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (Bob Dylan cover)
5.    "Get in the Ring"
6.    "Shotgun Blues"
7.    "Breakdown"
8.    "Pretty Tied Up"
9.    "Locomotive"
10.    "So Fine"
11.    "Estranged"
12.    "You Could Be Mine"
13.    "Don't Cry" (alternate lyrics)
14.    "My World"

the only constants being played in about every show have been the 4x red ones ("Don't Cry" more of an exception as not being played before 2007 with Axl's vocals), thats 4-5 songs out of 28 (when not counting "my world" and "dont cry (alternate)), 2 of them being only cover songs, the rest is coming from (pre-)AFD era (we have demos from 1986 from NR and DC; YCBM is said to be from AFD sessions)......most of the illusion tracks are still being ignored, what happened ??   Huh

These albums are getting more and more respect, I've found as the years have gone on. Even the close-minded ones who will not give the current Gnr lineup a chance , are now speaking about the Illusions in glowing terms, when it's possible they may not have in the past.

I've always felt the Illusions were incredible and certainly were a big part of my life at the time

^^but not during the live shows since the 01-01-01 comeback, no matter what line-up under the huge GN'R name from there on (for now).

I love the Illusion records, and I still don't think they fully get the praise they deserve. I disagree wholeheartedly when people say they should have been 1 record. Both albums are full of amazing songs, and to this day, it is still way ahead of it's time.

I like the matureness of these albums, but they still contained the anger and Axls' trademark attitude.

I really hope that some more illusion songs get an outing by the current band, they could pull them off brilliantly. Estranged is an obvious favourite as it means so much to so many people. But like Voodoo said, Don't Damn Me would be superb, a very underated song too in my opinion.

my take on UYI live songs:

- "right next door to hell", "perfect crime" (maybe "garden of eden") because some faster songs are kinda missing in their live sets post 2001
- "DTJ" with some longer guitar solos worked out by all 3 guitarists with switching guitar solo parts could work out nice, imagine a 10min version with kinda neverending good guitar parts!
- "Civil War", "Estranged", "Coma".....just because they should be in the setlists often as they're killer songs!!
- 14 years with Izzy (in 2011 it'd be 34 years  hihi)
- "breakdown", "locomotive" cause they could develop in something better and hardly have been played live, interesting to hear for sure.
- so^^ goes "dont damn me"

in general some more UYI stuff and more unstable setlists!
