CHERIE CURRIE ROCKS OC WITH JOAN JETT

Cherie Currie will be rocking with old bandmate opening for Joan Jett at Pacific Amphitheater August 11th.

I am very honored to play with her, she called one day and asked if I would help put a band together and I quickly responded with a Yes!!!!!!

I recruited Nick Maybury ( Perry Farrell, Mink) Grant Fitzpatrick (Mink) and Cheries son Jake Hayes will be rockin the other guitar and vocals. We are doing a bunch of Runaways tracks that are so fun to play. Sandy West?s drumming was so cool, especially for her age of 16 at the time Live in Tokyo was recorded. The tones of the guitar were awesome too Very Queens of the Stone age but done in the mid 70s of course. A couple of surprise covers and of course Cherry Bomb. Cherie sounds amazing and looks great as well.

Hope to see u all there for this very special performance

MATT

The Runaways are one of my favorite bands of all time, absolutely seminal.

Good to hear Cherie and Joan will be sharing a stage again.

MATT SORUM To Perform With CHERIE CURRIE In Costa Mesa - Aug. 5, 2010

VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum will perform with Cherie Currie when she supports her former RUNAWAYS bandmate Joan Jett and THE BLACKHEARTS on August 11 at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa, California as part of this year's Orange County Fair.

Commented Sorum: "[Cherie] called one day and asked if I would help put a band together and I quickly responded with a 'yes!'

"I recruited Nick Maybury (PERRY FARRELL, MINK) [and] Grant Fitzpatrick (MINK). Cherie's son, Jake Hayes, will be rockin' the other guitar and vocals.

"We are doing a bunch of RUNAWAYS tracks that are so fun to play.

"Sandy West's drumming was so cool, especially for her age of 16 at the time 'Live in Tokyo' was recorded. The tones of the guitar were awesome, too ? very QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, but done in the mid-'70s, of course.

"[We'll also be playing] a couple of surprise covers and, of course, 'Cherry Bomb'.

"Cherie sounds amazing and looks great as well."

Regarding the Orange County Fair's decision to book Jett for this year's event, Steve Beazley, the fair's chief executive officer, told CBS2.com, "We knew the movie ('The Runaways') was coming out this year ... so we immediately called her agent.

"Being in the proximity of Los Angeles has its pluses and minuses, but it means if you want to do something special or out-of-the-box like this show it's a little easier to effect."

Although the concert will not exactly be a RUNAWAYS reunion because Jett and Currie will be performing separately, Beazley told CBS2.com that he would be shocked if they didn't get behind the mic together for the band's biggest hit, "Cherry Bomb" and other tunes.

"Let's put it this way, the tickets are so affordable it's not a big gamble to come in and take that chance," Beazley said.

"When two artists are in the same venue anything can happen. It's so fun of Joan and Cherie to be mum on it, but gosh darn, if they're in same building and they don't do something together, well, something's just wrong with the universe."

From an interview with Cherie Currie:

You are in a band with your son Jake. What is it like to perform with him?

It's amazing!  Drummer Matt Sorum from Velvet Revolver and Guns 'N' Roses plays with us and he's a phenomenon. He is the band leader and Jake is a part of it. It was really neat because Matt had met Jake when he was a younger boy. Matt was nervous that Jake wasn't going to be able to pull it off in the band.  After the first rehearsal, he turned around and said, "My god this kid is amazing." It was such a relief! He's been playing guitar everyday since her was 14, so all that work paid off. To be honest with you, I'm 50 years old and I don't foresee myself having a musical career. Miracles happen, but the fact that I have an opportunity to show the talent of my kid is such a blessing. He has more talent in the tip of his finger then I have in my entire body. Jake is going to be going somewhere in music--I'm just happy to be on stage performing with him and Matt.

Here are a few videos from the show along with a short review.  It looks like a good time...

"Cherry Bomb" with Matt Sorum & Cherie Currie

Review:

Jett and the Blackhearts were preceded by former Runaway Cherie Currie on whom the movie The Runaways was based. Svelte, with long blond hair and clad in leather, Currie's set was fairly brief. She closed with the rocker "Cherrie Bomb." During the chorus, you could hear every girl in the seats singing along. As a bonus, former Guns 'N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum provided percussion. Though ancient like the rest of them, he has a style that is both powerful and full of finesse. Like a tap-dancing dinosaur.
