Myles Kennedy has the most annoying "singing voice" I have ever heard. When he hits high notes I literally cringe at how awful he sounds. The thought actually crossed my mind not to go to Slash's Sydney show as I don't know if I can stand to sit through 2 hours of Myle's annoying and whiney nothing voice. Very sad to hear him butcher classics.
you are in the very small minority on that one, and by minority I mean you and....you.

From the comments I've seen lately regarding Myles Kennedy -- he does seem to be in the minority.

Quote

Slash and Jimmy Page (who have worked up close and personal with the gold standards in rock during their career) have both had a woody over Myles within the past year or two because of his vocal talent and range. That's about as big a stamp of approval as a rock singer could ask for.

When you read reviews of the 4 gigs so far from Eddie Trunk at the Roxy to the most recent media reviews of the weekend shows the general consensus is he is more than doing justice to the original versions of the songs he sings, which is all you can ask of someone doing covers. That is a far leap from "butchering" as was suggested elsewhere.

Here is a real high quality version of Starlight.

It really is a beautiful song live and comes off really well, and Myles put a hell of a vocal on it. Probably the best of any of the singers he has worked with since he left Guns.

I really hope they make some more music together in the future as I think both of their songs from the Slash album are awesome, and his voice really compliments Slash's guitar well.

I have a feeling they will do something together in the future as well; and I'm not convinced in the least bit the Myles is 100% happy and such with Alter Bridge regardless of what he or the band says.  He may be finishing his obligations to the band and finishing what he started by doing the 3rd album any any subsequent tours but after that, I'd say is when we may see a future Slash/Myles or Myles joining some form of VR.  I say this because if he was completely happy, I doubt he'd be out the auditioning for and rehearsing with Zeppelin or even out on tour with Slash.  I also read somewhere he was a bit tired of singing pretty much in his baritone range with AB and working w Slash allows him the opportunity to use more of his versatile range.

Personally I think VR went w Scott rather than someone like Myles to distance themselves from sounding so much like GnR with a similar style singer to Axl but now that it's been about 6 years removed from forming the band; Slash is more interested in doing what he does best rather than trying to be something he's not.

just an opinion

well, they did get Scott Weiland who is one of the greatest frontmen to ever do it, so i think between the two, u have to go with Scott and for Contraband, that choice paid off greatly.

now though, u have to do whatever it takes to get Myles in VR.

He does a great job with all of the songs.. i agree with the above that said it makes u appreciate Axl even more. Myles isn't Axl but he is one of the only singers that can at least do GNR stuff justice.

Well a minority of three then, some songs seem suited for him like beggars and hangers on, but on nightrain the high notes just kill it for me. i still think he's an amazing singer but some songs aren't really happening with him singing.

it's still understandable since he has to cover something like 15 different singers and different tones and vocal ranges, so some of them are bound to fail. but i do have a problem with his high notes. they seem very off at times

Make that a minority of two, just never been a fan of Kennedy's voice.

Much more suited for Steel Dragon....

No, but he wrote plenty of other good songs for Contraband and even Libertad. He also has plenty of good songs written with STP.
What has Myles written that has become a hit?

They are okay songs but not great songs. I'm not trying to put Myles down or anything, I'm just not sure he's the right guy for VR. You need a solid frontman who's capable of writing good songs and giving direction to the band, someone who's on an equal footing with Slash and Duff, someone who can take bits and pieces of music, add vocals and put out a hit like Slither, for example.

oh... so instead of the 30 or so hit singles Scott has written, we are gonna focus on one little line of one song. Roll Eyes

I know people "hate" Scott cause of his rant about Axl, but Jesus Christ, u can't take away the legendary songs and performances Scott has put in

just look at his laundry list of hits and the scary thing is, songs that weren't big time "hits" are just as good as the hits Kitchenware and Candybars is one of the greatest songs of the 90's and it isn't considered one of their "hits"

Actually, I do like Sucker Train Blues. The lyrics are nonsensical but they work for the song.

wasn't really dissing scott or his contribution to Contraband b/c I loved that album; just making a point about Myles and comparing his songwriting
to some of Scott's

as I thought Libertad was one of Scott's weaker writing efforts and no, I don't hate scott b/c of his rant on Axl, I thought it was funny as hell

not for anything, but myles probably spent about 3o min writing lyrics for these songs as Slash said, the singers weren't writing music for their next hit album; and it doesn't seem like slash or wqhoever snag on the song agonized over it for an extended period of time, and the vocals were pretty much done in one evening at the studio

Exactly right. Listen to the high notes of Nighttrain and Civil War and it shows he's way out of his depth. He's not suited for those kinds of songs. He's more suited to generic rock songs that don't go that high. When he does go high you can hear he transitions from singing normally to a nasal kind of whine that attempts to mask the fact that he has no business going that high. I really do think Slash has dropped the ball recruiting him. Although, I understand why he did it. He's the flavour of the month.
