Slash Quit Smoking After Pneumonia

23 April 2010

SLASH refused to quit smoking while his mother was dying of lung cancer - he only kicked the habit after falling ill with pneumonia.

The former Guns N' Roses guitarist, 44, has been a heavy smoker for most of his adult life and admits his addiction to cigarettes spiralled after his mum, Ola, was admitted to hospital last year (09).

He says, "I smoked through the whole thing. I'd be sitting with her at the hospital and go out to smoke. Her illness was so sudden, the suffering went on for seven months and I was there through it all. Every five minutes I needed a cigarette - I had such a habit."

And it wasn't until the rocker suffered his own health scare, that he decided to quit.

He adds, "I became ill with a severe case of pneumonia. I couldn't smoke for two weeks, so I gave quitting a shot, but I am finding it hard."

That's the way it always is -- you have to suffer some scare before you'll stop.  Knowing you shouldn't smoke isn't enough.  Even with quitting now, it'll take a decade for Slash's lungs to clean out, so he's still very much susceptible to any form of cancer or disease.

Let me get this right. Slash is at his mother's bedside watching her die from lung cancer and he's going out every five minutes to smoke?! Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy that he quit. However, isn't that a little rude to his mother? You know it had to be heartbreaking laying there dying from lung cancer and watching your son step out continually to smoke.

You gotta live your own life though.  maybe he made excuses like "mom, im going to the vending machine" or "mom im going to the toilet".
besides, Ola worked with lots of musicians, im sure she knew enough about addictions not to preach. and im sure she was happy that her son was clean.

The operative word is "normally".  Slash has been smoking for around 30 years.  And this applies IF he manages to stay on the wagon.

No shit, Slash has always been a chain-smoker.  He said himself once, "I guess I smoke a lot.  I smoke in bed, on the toilet, and in the shower."  It's gonna take a decade or so to clean himself out once and for all, and again, that is IF he manages to refrain from lighting up again.  In the meantime, he's still vulnerable to disease while his lungs clear out.

I've been thinking the same thing since I read this, especially since most of those carcinogens he's breathing in end up leeching themselves to his clothing, and then he goes back in to sit with his dying mother. Real nice.

Oh please!!!  Thats nothing more than Slash hate right there.
If someone has a cigarette outside, then goes back inside, they are not affecting anyone.  (but themselves of course).

Typical that people can turn something so simple as Slash going outdoors to have a smoke into a Slash contributed to his mothers death thread.

There are ways to avoid passive smoke, one way is to leave the room when others light up a smoking device. Only enter buildings that clearly state they are smoke free. Surround yourself in a smoke free environment as well as those you associate with. If you have to be around passive smoke, try to limit your exposure and seek fresh clean air as soon as possible. Taking a shower and washing all clothes and other exposed items is also the best way to avoid inhaling excess carcinogens that may be attached to clothing.

i hope for your sake, you never use deodorant or drive a car.  that pollutes the environment and contributes to peoples deaths.
Or i hope you never made anybody a fry for breakfast. its bad for you and can also contribute to your death.

Slash left the building.

Hospitals are smoke free  ok

Again... the smoker goes outside.

Ola didn't have to be around it in a hospital bed.

Bit extreme wouldn't you think?  But people are supposed to wash frequently anyways.

I wasn't hating on Slash. I'm one of his biggest fans. I certainly never implied that he contributed to his mother's death in any way.

It's certainly true that some of the poison does indeed cling to your clothing, but that doesn't make the intent of your post any less of a "hate Slash" post, o' AXLsmainman.

Good use of the LOL andhihi in the same sentence though.  You must've received a few awards for nerd bashing in your time.
