Waiting for Promised Land....

Im just glad i won't have to hear anymore "slash hasn't done shit since...... bullshit"

While we're busy crossing things off the list, maybe we should declare dead the myth that Slash "just wants to play the same AC/DC style songs over and over" and that Slash is "not willing to put in the work and push himself to the next level, and needs someone to drag it out of him."

I was someone skeptical of this album sounding like a hodge podge mess of songs thrown together (because of the different singers) but in some strange way all of the ones we have heard sound different yet strangely not totally out of place with the others.

Slash showed an awful lot of ambition and foresight to pull this off considering he financed the whole thing himself without a record deal, thought of the right singers for each song (and from what we have heard so far did a pretty good job identifying who would sound good with what) and then getting all the legal clearances in place dealing with 18 different record labels.  All within the span of 2 years start to finish. Not bad.

While I truly enjoy the melodic nature of this song, its great guitar work and Myles' vocals apart from the falsetto usage, I think you're overestimating the scope of what Slash has done here in terms of pushing his boundaries.  He has shown a willingness to venture into more pop-rock territory and more admirably into more straight-up metal territory, but I don't think this is some huge quantum leap a la what U2 has done at multiple points in their career (as an example).  A lot of these songs, including this one, still play by and large to Slash's strengths.  Which, is neither good nor bad.  It just is.  And as such, while he does show more artistic courage than he has in the past, this is merely a step towards artistic evolution.  If he continues as a solo artist, perhaps he'll continue to push himself in new directions.

despite not being a big fan of MK, this is a good song.

the others, just bad stuff. i'm so bummed out right now after listening to them. i really had high hopes for this album.

your one of the very small minority; at least you have chinese democracy

you think? and you're basing this off what? has this been on the radio? any positive feedback anywhere besides a gnr/slash fan board?

and not sure what you mean by the CD comment. why you would somehow connect CD with this album and my comment doesn't make any sense.

There has been positive feedback from Eddie Trunk, Marc Canter and a bunch of musicians that have heard it.  (either because they played on it or are connected somehow).  Also rock magazines  have  given really good feedback about the album so far.

From what i have read on here so far and other GNR forums, people really dig it too.  Of course we're obviously hardcore fan's though.

but ive also seen a lot of positive comments on other pages like Youtube or Blabbermouth etc.

i think there is a lot of good feedback so far considering the album is not even out yet and there hasn't been any major promotional work.

We'll see how people take to it if Slash decides to release a video etc.

PS: Its a shame you havent liked it so far cos most people are really excited from what we've heard.  (Which is about half the album now)

I think it might sell well at least initially, since fans of the various artists on the album will also be interested and not just Guns / Slash fans. After that, it's anybody's guess. It'll depend on how they promote it - the tour, videos, single choices etc.
See I don't know if I buy that either.  In this day and age, with iTunes and such, do you really think a fan of Fergie or Adam Levine is going to buy the entire album for the ONE track they're interested in?  I'd suspect they'd buy that ONE track instead.  Now, the chances that a rock fan may be enticed by the group of rock musicians on the album may be a different story.  But you still might have the same scenario.  It's all going to depend on the single selections and how they're received.  So far though, as good as I think the song is, "By The Sword" hasn't exactly lit the world on fire.  Videos would help too, but I haven't heard anything on that front.  Slash is doing his normal promo blitz opening week, so that should help.

Back on topic.  "Starlight" seems to be a polarizing track.  People either love it, or hate it, there's not many opinions in between.  I really like the tune after first listen, which says a lot since that rarely happens for me.

Not a fan of this song vocally, but musically it sounds like Slash channeling the Stones through his guitar, and that's always a good thing.

Yes, we might see more track downloads than full album sales, but what I meant was that since the tracks have different singers, the album opens itself to various fan bases that may not have been interested in the album, say, for instance if it were a new VR album. There is also a chance that said fans will check out the other tracks on the album. These days digital sales are higher than physical media sales anyway, so that number is pretty much meaningless.

Well, I wouldn't say I 'hate' it. It's a good song, I'm just not a big fan of the vocals. I can still listen to it. Although I fear I won't be able to say the same thing for the Nick Oliveri track. nervous

I Love Slash, but Don't like this song - it's an avg. forgettable ballad that will get extremely boring after a few listens. Yes CD has a lot of ballads & I hate to compare, but the ballads on CD are far more intense & inspiring & stand the test of time after 100's of listens.

Slash fans shoot me now, but i think this whole record is gonna be very hit & miss & nobody will care about it in a couple months. This song only bolsters my case.

All my opionion only of course. smoking

Stop taking the thread off topic. It is troll behavior and has nothing to do with Starlight.

I don't think talking about Chinese Democracy is off topic in a Slash solo CD thread. The 2 are very correlating.
Both have more or less hired musicians for the recording part.
Only one man in each band is who the CD is about. Axl & Slash.
Both albums arguably have references to the other person in their lyrics.
This is the way rock n roll is supposed 2 be.
2 legends fighting fire with fire.
2 Amazing albums.
I love it.

Play Madagascar and Crucify the Dead right after each other. It's 2 spectrums of rn'r.
No one can say which one is better only that there both doing what they love and what we want to hear.

Edit: oops this being a thread solely for the song starlight makes this post and the others off topic.

Guess you and others don't think this song/album can stand on it's own merit.

Do we really need another "versus" thread whenever Slash does anything?

^ No I'm not like that at all. Of course I think it can stand on it's own.
I would have said the same things about Chinese Democracy if it came out second.
The thread is coming off topic a little bit, I think we can all handle it tho.

Myles Rocks!

Look at that, right back on topic.

the reference I made to CD for your comment was if you dont like the Slash album; at least you have CD to listen to; wasnt making a derogatory comment about CD or comparing it to Slash's album; I enjoyed CD immensely but here in the US, after a month, it waslargely forgotten about and off the charts

i only listened to it once; as I had it on my shitty laptop and to get a feel for the melodies and guitar work; I won't listen to it extensively till I can put it on a proper stereo to really dig into it though

but from what I heard, it ranks behind by the sword, beatiful dangerous, ghost; but over the kid rock song, and equal to the ozzy tune; so, middle of the pack; much more psyched about back to cali from the little i heard
