Duff McKagan: A Few Songs You'll Hear Us Play at Hootenanny For Haiti

By Duff McKagan, Monday, Feb. 15 2010

I am honored to have been asked to take part in Hootenanny For Haiti, a gig on Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Showbox at the Market raising money to benefit those devastated by the earthquake in Haiti. Mike McCready from Pearl Jam has assembled some really great players for the gig. It should be a blast. We had a rehearsal for it here in Seattle this past Saturday. Here is a short sample of the song list:

"Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory," Johnny Thunders: If you want a quick snapshot into JT's misery and heartache, look no further than CPYAAM. This song provided part of the soundtrack for my angst-ridden teenage years.

"River Of Deceit," Mad Season; A brutal and beautiful ballad to those left stranded in life. If you have never heard Mad Season, now is your chance. Download the whole record!

"Heaven Is A Place On Earth," Belinda Carlisle: That's right, we are doing this song at the Haiti gig. The bigger surprise and pleasure is who is going to sing it. Curious? Go to the gig!

Duff McKagen Discusses ?Hootenanny for Haiti? and Signed Lennon Guitar Auction

Andrew Vaughan| 03.19.2010

A who?s who of Seattle?s finest musicians got together to raise money for those in need with the Hootenanny for Haiti benefit last month. Artists such as Duff McKagan of Velvet Revolver and Loaded, Pearl Jam?s Mike McCready, Soundgarden?s Matt Cameron, Jeff Rouse of Loaded and Seattle icon Kim Warnick assembled at Seattle?s Showbox at the Market Theater for an informal musical gathering, an old style ?hootenanny.?

For Duff McKagen, the event was inspiring on more than one level.

Well first off, it was a great cause. Everyone donated their time, and Ticketmaster donated money from the show. And playing with all of those people was sort of a boon to my inspirations lately. You get these little hits once in a while that inspire you. Mike and I have known each other since we were kids, and everyone there was great. You know, a great group of musicians. Jeff Rouse, and all those girl singers were amazing ? they were all great. I?d wanted to see the girl from Ellensburg, Star Anna. I had heard about her and finally got to see here at rehearsal the night before. Amazing.

Mike McCready and Duff McKagen, have signed the Gibson J160E acoustic guitar they played throughout the show and, along with Gibson, have donated it to Partners in Health via online auction site charitybuzz.com.

So I was walking into the Moore Theater, which was where we rehearsed the night before the show, and Gary Westlake was taking that Gibson guitar out of its case and tuning it and playing a couple of chords. And as he was doing that, I was walking into this huge theater space and the guitar sounded so good. I thought, ?What the Hell was that?? I thought it was some old treasured guitar he had, it sounded so good. So I said, ?Well, I?ll play it!?

I?ve played guitar my whole life. I have a Gibson J-200; you know, the big fat one. That?s my nice luxurious acoustic that I?ve taken on tour with Velvet Revolver, and it?s what I use when we play ?Patience? and some other acoustic numbers. That?s my fancy guitar. But the Lennon guitar I played that night was a lot more versatile than the J-200. It?s more manageable, I guess, and playing-wise I really liked it. You can kind of bash it around and not feel too bad. My Gibson J-200 is way too precious ? it?s like ?Ooh no!? The Lennon is more of a working man?s guitar: great to play, great sound.

The Gibson J-160E was first released in 1954 and made famous by The Beatles in the ?60s. The guitar features a solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, trepezoid finger inlays, single coil magnetic pickup at the neck, and volume and tone controls. The Gibson hardshell case is included. The online auction is open until March 29, 2010. Go to http://www.charitybuzz.com/catalog_items/131057.
