Been watching alot of Bob Sheppard coverage this morning - a great man who led a great life.
He'll be missed throughout baseball.

I agree he deserved it more.
But I wonder if Joe was taking into consideration that little foot issue from last week...and figured Youk would turn him down.
Or maybe not.

Adrian Beltre left yesterday's Sox game due to INJURY. Big surprise. The Sox, and Adrian, are saying it isn't serious. But the Sox say the same thing about all their injuries and so far they've only been right with Youkilis.
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2010/07/12/it_strains_the_imagination_now_beltre_hurt/?camp=localsearch:on:twit:sox
TORONTO — Adrian Beltre is headed to the All-Star Game. Whether he plays has not been determined.
The third baseman suffered what the Red Sox described as a strained left hamstring while running out a ground ball in the fifth inning of yesterday’s 3-2 victory over Toronto.
He stayed in the game for the bottom of the inning then was taken out.
“Hopefully it’s more of a cramp. That would be the hope. He didn’t want to come out,’’ manager Terry Francona said. “Once we got the lead he kind of relented.
“We’ll check him out. Obviously with the three days off and him going to the All-Star Game, we’ll stay with him daily. He’ll check in every day and [we’ll] see how he’s doing.’’
Beltre thought the injury was serious at first. But his condition improved quickly once he got off his feet.
“It’s tough to tell because I thought it was going to be worse,’’ he said. “It felt like something was going to pop, and every time I curled my legs I got a cramp on it. Hopefully tomorrow it feels better.’’
The Sox would move to exclude Beltre from playing if they feel there is any danger of his becoming more injured. After being selected to the All-Star team for the first time, Beltre is eager to participate. He is hitting .330 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs.
“So far I’m playing for now if they ask me to,’’ he said. “But we’ll see how it feels tomorrow.’’
Beltre said he would not take any unnecessary risks.
“If I don’t feel good, I won’t play,’’ he said. “It’s the All-Star Game, but I don’t want to screw up the season for a couple at-bats in an exhibition game. I’ll be cautious on that.’’
The Sox already have 11 players on the disabled list. When Beltre came out of the game, second baseman Bill Hall moved to third and Eric Patterson came in to play second.
It was the first time Hall has played third base this season. The only positions he has yet to play are catcher and first base.

Lee to the Yanks??
If it comes to fruition, holy fuckin smokes.

Apparently, what broke down the Yankd deal was the nagging sprained ankle of Adams. Seattle just wasn't comfortable with it. Yanks offered one substitution (which the Mariners agreed to) but the Mariners asked for an additional player, too...and the Yanks balked.
I'd be a whole lot more comfortable with that ankle, if I were Seattle, than I would be with this:

Yikes, I wouldn't want to be Jack Zduriencik, right now. Seems, as the GM, that's something you might want to let those higher up the food chain know, eh?

I heard last night that the decision wasn't Joe's. It went by number of votes. Not sure what votes exactly though. Youk finished ahead of Konerko in the fan vote, didn't he?

Not sure which vote totals they use:
"Final" vote (unlikely)
Initial AS fan vote (possible)
Player votes (likely)

George Steinbrenner apparently passed away late last night/early this morning.
Like him or not, Steinbrenner was a HUGE influence on MLB, and, obviously, my favorite team.
RIP, George.....

Yankees say George Steinbrenner dies at 80
NEW YORK, Tue Jul 13
The Yankees say owner George Steinbrenner has died. He was 80.
Spokesman Howard Rubenstein said he died Tuesday morning. He had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details.
Steinbrenner, who celebrated his birthday July 4, had been in fragile health for several years.
Flags were immediately lowered to half-staff at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees' spring training complex. The Yankees says many employees there were in tears.
The death comes two days after the team's beloved public-address announcer Bob Sheppard died at 99.
God bless his soul.
