I lol'd at the tweets but it seriously is a messed up story - honestly, they couldn't find another zoo to take the thing? That said I've eaten kangaroo, crocodile, horse, and all sorts of other critters in my time, so...

That was their explanation, yes.  However, whether or not that was the only option is part of the outrage from the public and I think Axl is alluding to that as well.

Being Danish myself, I feel this story has been blown out of proportion. A giraffe had to be put down in order to avoid inbreeding. The killing of the giraffe wasn't public but the butchering was, so that school children might have a chance of seeing what a giraffe looks like on the inside. Afterwards, the dismembered parts of the animal were given to the lions so the meat wouldn't be wasted. It's common to feed the lions in public here in Denmark and so is the carving up of dead animals from our zoos. That's actually quite educational. Now, the manager of the zoo has received death threats for this "murder", probably from people who usually eat steaks or pork chops from other "murdered" animals. But then again, a pig is not as cute as a giraffe. On a somewhat different note, the next time Axl mentions my land of origin, I hope it's because his band is playing a show here!

Athough he's making jokes about it he claims to be an animal lover, so is it possible that among his sarcasm is the saying "many a truth told in jest" applied? He doesn't want to get all serious about it but is bringing it to light?

It was a dreadful thing to do when the giraffe could have been relocated, it could also have been worse had they released the giraffe into the lion's enclosure & it was chased & killed as it would in the wild.
