is it possible that the media is keeping this information under wraps because they don't want people to know how successful chinese democracy really is?

Yeah, it's a big conspiracy. I'm sure Jay-Z is responsible for this. He must be afraid that if the true number of units sold are known,
he'd have to invite a rock-star to play on his next album. Must be that.

From May 15th...

"Chinese Democracy" was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 3, 2009 for shipments in the United States in excess of one million copies. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the CD has sold 578,000 copies in the U.S. so far.

Blabbermouth.net

That kind of meshes with the number I found. I'd say it has sold from 600,000 to 700,000 units so far in the U.S.
International seems to be in excess of 5 million.

joke all you want, but anybody who follows gnr knows how the media loves to misquote and twist words to fit their anti-axl agenda.  so i wouldn't be surprised one bit if they tried to make CD look like a disappointment in any way they can.

no, it has nothing to do with jay z.  you are a funny, funny man.

Nielsen Soundscan is not the 'media'. They make a money out of this, so their reports can be deemed accurate.

Since I don't think anyone else tracks albums sales, it's the only number you get. I wouldn't say it's 100% accurate,
but I certainly don't think they are making any money by under quoting the number CD sold.

The best numbers I could get using Google: At the end of April 2009, Chinese Democracy had sold 572,578 units. FWIW.

From May 15th...

According to Nielsen SoundScan, the CD has sold 578,000 copies in the U.S. so far.

Might as well round up to 600,000 for your bet.... Well below the 2 mil for VR

Two people with reliable sources say otherwise.

Unless a million people rushed to Best Buy, knocking people over, to each buy a copy TODAY.

The way I look at it, it's still selling, and with the tour hopefully it will sell more.  Smiley

Thanks. Yes, I know CD's platinum cert verifies 1 million copies (shipped). This was official in February.

Long story short, I've got a bet going with a friend of mine that CD would sell (ship) more copies within it's first year of release than Contraband did. I OBVIOUSLY made this bet back when Contraband first came out...had no way to predict the complete lack of promotion for CD or a proper tour for it upon it's release.

We tracked down Contraband's first year sales numbers from RIAA...somewhere around 1.85 million (we rounded it off to 2 million). With less than a week left for CD's first year, I'm trying to find the actual number of units shipped via RIAA's resourses.

Anyone else have a way to track these numbers down?

I think you lost that bet. CD isn't anywhere near 1.85 million.

That sounds like a reasonable possibility.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Just a friendly bet between friends that started when he made some kind of comment that Contraband was SO GOOD that there was no way a Slash-less GN'R could sell more in it's debut year.

The other thing is this...WHY was CD certified Platinum (more than a million copies shipped) in February, if, as some of you suggest, Best Buy never needed to order more copies after their initial shipment? If that was, in fact, the case, AND if Best Buy did order 1.3 million copies of CD in their exclusive deal, wouldn't CD have been certified as being "shipped Platinum" as the Platinum award recognizes albums shipped as oppossed to albums sold?

Either way, it definitely looks like I will lose this bet  Undecided  Too bad...it's a MUCH better album than Contraband is and, if marketed right (at all) it would have certainly eclipsed Contraband IMO.

contraband outsold CD in the US; but they sold about the same globally i think
