Yes. I don't see why Don't Cry is so special. You would use alternate picking for most songs unless a riff specifically uses only up or down strokes.

My fingering has always been kinda lazy and I never know whether it's always appropriate to use alternate picking.... but you say I should do it in most cases then?

I use alternate picking for everything. The only time when I use strict up strokes or down strokes are for some hammer on / pull off riffs that run vertically down the fretboard or for example during sweeps. I don't think there are 'strict rules' as to when to use alternate picking. Just go with the flow.

Don't Cry definately sounds as if it flows better now I've mastered it with the alternate picking....

Alternate picking makes one so much faster when mastered.  John Sykes and Zakk Wylde are alternate picking monsters.
