- In 1992, MTV requested Nirvana perform their smash hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit," while the band itself had indicated it preferred to play its new songs, "Rape Me" and "tourette's". Network executives continued to push for "Teen Spirit" but finally offered the band a choice to play either "Teen Spirit" or "Lithium," which the band appeared to accept.[citation needed] However, at the actual performance, Nirvana began to play, and Kurt Cobain played the first few chords of the song, "Rape me", much to the horror of MTV execs.[citation needed] The band did finally return to its regular performance of "Lithium." Near the end of the song, frustrated that his amp had stopped functioning, bassist Krist Novoselic decided to toss his bass into the air for dramatic effect. Unfortunately, he misjudged the landing, and the bass ended up bouncing off of his forehead, forcing him to stumble off the stage in a daze.[9] At that same event, Guns N' Roses vocalist Axl Rose challenged Cobain to a fight after he, his wife and Hole frontwoman, Courtney Love, and Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, egged him on.[citation needed] Additionally, in the end of Nirvana's performance on the VMA of the same year, while Cobain was trashing the band's equipment, drummer Dave Grohl ran to the mike and shouted "Hi, Axl! Where's Axl?" repeatedly. Nevertheless, Guns N' Roses' hit ballad "November Rain" became the most-requested video on MTV, eventually winning an MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography that year. During the awards show, the band performed "November Rain" with singer Elton John. Because of the previously mentioned dispute Axl had with Cobain, moments before the "November Rain" performance, Cobain spat on the keys of what he thought was Axl's piano. Cobain later revealed that he was shocked to see Elton John play on the piano he had spat on
- The 1993 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 2, 1993, honoring the best music videos from July 1, 1992 to June 30, 1993. The show was hosted by Christian Slater at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles.
- The 1994 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 8, 1994, honoring the best music videos from June 16, 1993 to June 15, 1994. The show was hosted by Roseanne Barr at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Kurt Cobain was honored this night.
- The 2000 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 7, 2000, honoring the best music videos from June 12, 1999 to June 9, 2000. The show was hosted by Marlon and Shawn Wayans at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The 2000 show is best remembered for Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine climbing a piece of set scaffolding and refusing to come down after his band lost the award for Best Rock Video to Limp Bizkit. The show went to commercial while security removed Commerford, who was later arrested and forced to spend a night in jail. Eighteen-year-old Britney Spears garnered controversy over her skin-colored performance attire, which gave the impression that she was nude but for strategically placed crystals. Bizkit vocalist Fred Durst later joined Christina Aguilera onstage as a surprise guest during her performance of Come on Over Baby (All I Want Is You). For the second year in a row DMX did not show up for his scheduled performance; as a result, Nelly's performance, originally scheduled for the pre-show, was promoted to the main event. Other highlights included Eminem performing amidst an army of "Slim Shady" lookalikes and a humorous montage dedicated to past VMA winners who had failed to repeat their previous success.
