Epic barbecuing win
«

So about 2 months ago, there was a coupon floating around online for $6 off a 13.5 pound or larger bag of Kingsford charcoal. I printed two and waited. I don't use much charcoal since I also have a gas grill that I use more often, but I want to go back to charcoal whenever possible just for the hell of it.
So this weekend, I decide I might as well look into using one of the coupons since I need charcoal. I go in to Walmart and Kingsford charcoal is on sale. An 18-pound bag for $6.76.
So I went home with 18 pounds of charcoal for 76 cents. What's the opposite of FML?

Sweet, charcoal is the way to go too, it tastes better than gas grills IMO.

I never use propane, gas, butane, whatever.
Charcoal and different types of wood are the way to go.
I just love spraying lighter fluid into an open flame.

What is it that Hank Hill says about propane?
"Taste the meat, not the heat"?

I prefer propane, but not because of flavor. In fact, I almost always use some sort of smoking agent in my grill when I fire it up.
Propane is so much more convenient and easy to use in a backyard setting. When we go out, to the State Forest or beach...we bring charcoal and our little Smokey Joe (actually, it's a Smokey Homer....it's "Simpson" themed). Nothing like it, I agree. But it's just too much of a pain in the rear, given how much we grill during the summer, to fire up the charcoal every time. Much easier to turn the dial, flip the switch, and dump either a foil packet (for "extreme smoke) or our little cast iron smoker into the grill.
So while I disagree with Hank's sentiment...I must admit, I'd be a customer!

Just returned from camping trip this weekend. Charcoal bbq for this trip. Had some excellent steaks. I don't know what is about being in the wilderness cooking outside, but the food is just so damn good. We put our corn on the cob on the grill as well.
Big ol propane grill for home though!! Convenience at it's best
and still mighty tasty. Hardly ever cook indoors in the summer.

Lazy American!
Not so much lazy as busy. 3 kids don't leave a lot of time for heating charcoal, waiting for embers, and THEN cooking. It just takes too long, considering we use our grill 3 or 4 times a week from April through October (about as long as we can without fighting cold and snow). It's MUCH easier to turn on the tank, turn on a couple burners, and drop some form of smoke in the body of the grill.
Charcoal grilling is great, don't get me wrong. But we use our grill almost as much as our oven/cooktop during the warmer months....and charcoal's just not practical to do that often. Not to mention, it's a LOT more expensive...I fill my propane tank for about $7 and it lasts me a good month or so....a bag of charcoal costs about the same and usually lasts 4 or 5 "fire ups" in our "Smokey Homer".
Now, for our family outings to the beach, or the State Forest, or any of that stuff: I got me a bag of Kingsford, a bottle of lighter fluid (used sparingly...nobody wants to tast THAT on their food) and our Smokey Homer stashed in the back of the car. On those days, I can take the time to fire up a grill, relax, watch it ember, and then throw the grill over the heat and fire up some steaks (or burgers, dogs, chicken..whatever). And nothing beats charcoal, except maybe a fire pit, when it comes to toasting marshmallows.
But, when I get home from work at 5:30, and want to fire up dinner...there just isn't time to be messing with lighter fluid and briquettes. And the kids aren't too keen on waiting all night for dinner.....

Hardly ever cook indoors in the summer.
I hardly ever cook indoors period. I grew up in Cleveland. We tailgate in the Municipal parking lot before Browns games in single digit temps with a 30 mph wind blowing in off Lake Erie as we sit there wondering why the hell the coals won't light. So grilling in a Texas winter ain't too bad.
I have a propane grill too that I use for convenience. But at 76 cents for 18 pounds of charcoal, I'll be using the little charcoal grill a LOT more for a while.
Tried to smoke a brisket on the charcoal grill the other day. Failed miserably and tossed it in the oven instead. Next purchase: a small, upright smoker.

Is there more BBQ sauce or more meat on these ribs?
