Don't want to sound like something I'm not but, wasn't he originally hired to play Josh Freese's parts note for note ( but with his feeling ) ?
How was that not telling him what to do Undecided  ? Maybe because of that "signature style" he is talking about ?

I know that when he plays live with GnR he does his own thing but on Chinese Democracy, uh... ?

Or maybe in some of the songs, drum parts are actually 100% his ?

He does have writing credits on Shackler's Revenge, Sorry, and something else if I remember correctly, so it's probably safe to assume that he's not strictly playing stuff Freese had previously written for the album

Anyway, I'm not saying that you don't feel that it's him playing on this album. You DO. And that's cool since he's my favourite drummer ever ( second one being Tim Alexander ).

he said it clearly in an interview

1st
he re recorded freese parts of 30 songs... note by note

2nd
he started bringing stuff brand new and writing and re recorded again the 30 songs in his style

3rd
the final record has the combination of the two recordings
riad is the only song with a complete freese arrangement

Josh Freese only has drum arrangement credits on 5 of the songs, and Brain has a co-credit on some of them. That leaves 9 other songs thats Brain's own work.
Brain said he had to play Josh's parts note for note but he also said he got to do his own thing after that.

like on shacklers sorry scraped  hihi

like the above 2 posts said, nope

and
to my understanding he referred to 30sh songs on which freeze already wrote kickass drum parts but I don't think that was all the material they had then or they have now.
