It hurts me to say this, as i love this f'ing band and they will always be my favorite, but I believe that every guitarist in guns n' roses has been more talented, better technically, and better soloists that dj ashba.  forgive me for jumping the gun on him, as i know he has not even done a show with the band, or played on chinese democracy or the future album.  I have listened to ashba's music and have seen the few videos of him on youtube.  although he is a good musician, i heard and saw nothing that made him stand out as a great or unique guitarist.  i do not think he is in the same ballpark as the guitarists in the band currently or in the past: robin, richard, bumble, bucket, izzy, slash (i exlude paul tobias from this list as i think he's only done rock in rio III with the band, and I'm not to familiar with his current band).  I really hope he proves me wrong, but i'm a pretty good judge of talent on guitar.  Its all relative i guess.       

i've never really cared about the way the band members have looked either, as the music is the most important thing for me.  i didnt mind buckethead's look, as strange as it was, because he is one of the greatest guitarists on the planet.  DJ is 36 years old and looks like he should be in avenged sevenfold or good charlotte with his look.  women love him though, which is good for the band as more of them will be going to the shows and buying tickets and cd's. 

I trust axl's decision, and i hope that ashba proves me wrong.

I feel the same way. GnR goes emo. We haven't had that yet. 
But let's give the guy a change, I don't care about his looks as long as he is a good guitarist it is fine by me.

Just because he has a studio and wrote a couple of pop rock tracks doesn't make him a 'strong' songwriter.  Ron is the strongest songwriter after Axl at the moment imho.

Interesting observation. Especially considering Ron didn't co-write any of the album tracks.

I guess others would look at the song credits and judge by those.

But just to offer some "evidence" of what I was trying to say, Tommy co-wrote some songs on the album and he's written some cool songs too.... It's just a matter of preference, I think.



I think they all have something to offer to the band. Not just the talent of playing their respective instruments.

Jarmo is right.  Anyone heard of a little band named The Replacements, a collaboration between Tommy and Paul Westerberg.  He is the glue that has held things together since he joined and is genuine enough to admit tailoring his style to fit what Duff used to do with the Appetite-era stuff.

Wow, he has a very nice setup. I will miss Finck,
But I feel very confident in having DJ in the mix, DJ + Richard will be a killer guitar duo live on stage,
they both have that edgy rocker vibe going.
Dj is no buckethead, but im sure hell bring a whole other dimension to the guns lineup.

When the posters defending Dj Ashba are mostly women. It's not a very good sign.
AS for songwriters, I'd say Tommy is the best songwriter after axl.

Paul Tobias, Tommy, Buckethead, Dizzy and Chris Pitman left us some pretty good gems of songwriting in the album. And I'm sure they all wrote a lot more (maybe with some more contributions with Robin, Richard and even Ron).

I don't think they were "needing" a strong songwriting. Once Ashba came in, it may be a great plus for them, but not exactly what they were looking for at the moment.
