The Random Wikipedia articles thread
«
on:
February 19, 2009, 07:19:36 PM »
This was just a question in the 'Ask a question to the person below you' thread but it has grown into something more. Something.... historic.
OK, what happens is this: click the 'random article' link on Wikipedia and tell us an interesting fact (or facts) from the article which appears. You should be able to get
something
, though there are some articles which do make no sense at all. Hopefully we can all become a little bit more educated in the ways of the world. I'll start this thing with.....
J. P. Mallory
He is an archaeologist and a professor at Queen's University in Belfast. He is also the editor of the
Journal of Indo-European Studies
.
Your turn.

Parthenice Tiger Moth
The Parthenice Tiger Moth (Grammia parthenice) is a moth of the Arctiinae family. It is found in Southern Canada, and the United States, except for the West Coast.
The wingspan is about 40 mm.
The larvae feed on various low growing plants, including dandelion, vernonia and thistles.
Cool, it eats thistles, intresting

Limor Pereg
(born 1977) is an Israeli-born painter and photographer. Commissioned by the Israeli government, she is most famous for her portrait of Pope John Paul II, a gift presented to the Italian government, in celebration of Jewish-Catholic relations.
Limor?s paintings are post-modern in style. One of her more popular exhibits is a series of paintings of women, highlighting different parts of their bodies, such as accentuating curves and distorting proportions. Proving the wide appeal of her work, many of her other paintings are commissioned by private owners for their own homes.

The
Six Hills
are a collection of Roman barrows situated alongside the old Great North Road in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. They are classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and are protected by law.
Also...:
Local legend holds that they were the work of the Devil, who, sitting one day looking down on the Great North Road, began to amuse himself by heaving clods of earth at the passers-by. He missed six times and in a temper threw a seventh clod over his shoulder, hitting the spire of Graveley church and knocking it askew. The spire is crooked to this day.

Tatsuya Sakuma
(佐久間達也 ,Sakuma Tatsuya?, 4 July 1974, Miyagi) is a Japanese professional drifting driver, currently competing in the D1 Grand Prix series for Team Toyo.
He has competed in the D1GP series since the very beginning, starting out in a Nissan Silvia PS13 He did not do very well, scoring only 2 points in his first 4 years. His big break came when he was signed by Aviation Performance Products, who gave him a new Nissan Silvia S15 to drive. In 2005, his first year with APP, he scored 41 points, getting a third and second place and finishing ninth overall. The year after he did even better finishing seventh oveall, this lead to him moving to Team Toyo in 2007. Since then he hasn't done so well, Team Toyo S15 obviously not suiting his driving style.

The teachings of Jesus focus on mercy, reconciliation and redemption; this recurring theme in the gospel message is invoked by the Catholic Church to oppose the death penalty. Church fathers such as Clement of Rome and Justin Martyr asserted that the taking of human life is incompatible with the gospel and exhorted Christians not to participate in capital punishment. The church's opposition to the death penalty declined after Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire. Augustine recognized the death penalty as a means of deterring the wicked and protecting the innocent. In the Middle Ages, Thomas Aquinas reaffirmed this position.

Roman Catholicism and capital punishment

Prakash Vir Shastri Avenue
is an urban street road in New Delhi, known for spanning the majority of the city and classically housing the city Members of Parliament for the state of Uttar Pradesh. The avenue also contains Gate 35, which serves as the main entrance to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the palatial home of the President of India.[1][2] The road leads from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, a 937 bed Central Government hospital located in urban New Delhi that caters mainly to Indian politicians and bureaucrats.
The avenue was renamed from North Avenue in November 2002 in honor of the Member of Parliament of its namesake, who lived here during his tenure as a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Ngāti Hotu
was a Māori iwi according to Māori tradition, lived in the central North Island of New Zealand in the area surrounding Lake Taupo, where the modern day Ngāti Tūwharetoa iwi of the Arawa people resides. Tradition describes Ngāti Hotu as 'a very fierce and warlike people' whom it took many generations of warfare to destroy, beginning from around the year 1450. Other traditions describe them as spirit people, which as is typical in Māori tradition, were of non-Māori appearance, having reddish hair and skin, symbolising their tapu nature.
