It is # 85 and it is certified platinum not bad for a record sold only at about 800 stores with no promotion or big single! beer

promotion??? sure.

it's sold 1Million already??

it just broke the 500,000 a few weeks ago... and there hasn't been a climb in sales.

it's more like gold... not platinum.

Its listed as platinum on the billboard chart, I was as surprised as anybody not sure if Best Buy purchases are in there or if those are actual customer sales.  If Billboard listed it as platinum than its platinum!  As far as promotion, I don't classify what Best Buy did as much in the way of promotion.  Im just saying everyone was ready to call this record a flop, it has done considerably well considering the economy, promotion and lack of info from the band.  How many other artist could do this?

Monumental promotion started yesterday with Brain's email!   hihi

Seriously though, if the copies BB bought were included in the numbers, wouldn't it have been certified platinum in the first week?

It states "RIAA certification for net shipment of for 1 million units...." I would venture to guess that they have not sold one million albums yet. Here in Phoenix, many of the Best Buys received 800-1,100 copies of the album, so based upon there being 800+ Best Buy stores, it would not have been platinum the first week (I'm assuming many stores in smaller cities received much smaller shipments as well). Considering that Kanye West's 808s album was just certified last week, there's no way that GN'R could've sold up to that number (since Kanye has been much higher on the chart over this period of time).

OK, platinum certification means that one million copies have been shipped.  We all knew that Best Buy had agreed to snatch up at least that many copies so this isn't a big surprise.  It probably shipped platinum the first week and it's just a matter of when the record company applies to the RIAA for platinum certification.

Lunsjail is right it means a million copies have been shipped to Best buy not a million people have bought the album. But after tour, Better video, Ballads with video , interviews and an appearance at VMAs it will have been bought by at least 3 or 4 million people me thinks

wow... you're stuck in 1991 are you? records don't sell like that anymore really. 3 or 4 million in 2 1/2 months? you're quite optimistic.

Lil Wayne who has the biggest seller hasn't even moved that in like 6 months. Not saying he has better music... just better sales.

Ohh yeah the label has done its job for now. Its cashed in with the Best Buy deal. I can see why a re-release in more stores is being discussed. You can deliver more sales and cash in even more.
