Depends on what continent you live on.

No it doesn't.

FOOTBALL is ONE sport which is played almost everywhere. There's a federation called FIFA (where ''football'' is mentioned, not ''soccer'').

Soccer is another thing. In this case, Winning Eleven is a Playstation FOOTBALL videogame, not soccer. Brazil and France teams play FOOTBALL, not soccer.

SOCCER, for example, the Major League Soccer, has not the exact same rules as football. It used to have a countdown clock, some weird shootouts to resolve tie games, golden goals, etc. That wasn't football: that was soccer.

I am talking about the name. Axl is NOT playing soccer in that video. Why did USA needed to create an engender from football, name it differently and change some of the most basic rules? Who knows...

Same for basketball, but its (luckily) called basketball anyway. The whole world shares the same set of rules for basketball, FIBA rules, except USA.

When the different dream teams play olympics, or world cups, they obviously need to re-adapt to FIBA rules.

yeah, but following your rationale, the nba shouldn't be called basketball.

I personally don't give a flying hoot whether a league changes the rules a bit for whatever reason. The international leagues also change the rules every so often. Don't be a dictator.

soccer = football in my book. Personally, I won't call it soccer, because Im not from the US. But I wont start a whole debate about whether soccer is football or not, nor will I tell people from the US that they suck just because they are naming the sport differently.  Tongue

The fact is that football as we all know is not popular in USA as basketball or baseball...maybe that's why they are so terrible.
When Beckham was hired by LA Galaxy for a couple of million dollars they were intended to popularize the sport in the US... but It seems that didn't work anyway.

they've tried the same with pele or beckenbauer in the 70's.
football is only knowed as soccer in the US, basically because they have another sport already called football, that we in europe call "american football". the stupid thing is that american football is mostly played with hands, and is more like rugby than anything.

Congrats to the author! Very cool!

I wonder if Axl saw that and what does he think about it. Bet he may have a good laugh.

Hey..
what about this?

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=5KaN70xGfdc

Before the Brazillian 1st Division of Soccer, 2008, Sport Recife vs. S?o Paulo, they played Sweet Child O' Mine in the Stadium (Ilha do Retiro) and a guy who's a fan of GN'R started incorporating Axl (he looks like more Slash  rofl)

By the way.. he said that his daughter is called Lisa Rose, because of Axl Rose =D

Football is one of the oldest organised sprts in the world....i think there was football before there was "American" football, NFL etc.

I chuckled right through that!

In NZ, we call it soccer. I think in most places in Europe it's football, but in other countries where there is a different sport that people like to play it's called soccer.  I mean, to us, 'the footy' is Rugby. In Australia, 'the footy' is Aussie Rules, a different game again.  Go figure!
