America is now under Martial law. All constitutional rights have been suspended. Stay in your homes. Do not attempt to contact loved ones, insurance agents or attorneys. Shut up. Do not attempt to think or depression may occur. Stay in your homes. Curfew is at 7 PM sharp after work. Anyone caught outside the gates of their subdivision sectors after curfew will be shot. Remain calm, do not panic. Your neighbourhood watch officer will be by to collect urine samples in the morning. Anyone caught interfering with the collection of urine samples will be shot. Stay in your homes, remain calm. The number one enemy of progress is questions. National security is more important than individual will. All sports broadcasts will proceed as normal. No more than two people may gather anywhere without permission. Use only the drugs prescribed by your boss or supervisor. Shut up, be happy. Obey all orders without question. The comfort you demanded is now mandatory. Be happy. At last everything is done for you.

Aren't you aware that Bush has retired?
The days of "you're either with us or against us" are over.
People questioning the war aren't labeled un-patriotic anymore!

D, it shouldn't have to be my "right" to pay for their emphysema/COPD asses when they're too old to work and pay for their own medical care. That's the point of a tax like that.
That said, limiting it to just soda pop is fucking stupid. Tax it at the source. Sugar and corn are the root of the obesity epidemic...those items and lazy people who don't want to get off their fat asses.

Corn is produced cheaply and is used in almost every product in all its various offshoots (high-fructose corn syrup etc..).
It will never be taxed. Corn can be found in almost everything, even in your bread.
Real sugar is hardly ever used in our food products.

For some reason, people think they need the government to tell them how to live their life, what to eat, what to drive, what kind of house they should live in, etc., etc., etc. It's about this new mentality that people want the government to take care of them, provide a job for them, provide transportation for them, provide a house for them, provide health care for them, provide child care for them, and on and on and on.
And as far as the tax, this is only the beginning people. Taxes are fixing to go ballistic with this asshole in office. He's got to find some way to pay for all his failing and failed programs.

How does everyone here rate Obama over all up to this point?
Right now I give him a 4/10.
The Health Care thing is a debacle.
The Beer Summit was laughable.
The Stimulus so far has failed.
We are sending more troops instead of sending some home.
He can turn it around, but so far, unimpressed.
I am being objective here. I see no "improvement" since Bush, and that is sad.

9/10. and I'm not going to pretend I'm "objective," and neither should you Guns.
Where's the stock market right now? I didn't hear you mention the positive economic numbers emerging. Hmm, why are people investing in this socialist state? Are they confused?
For Drew, gimme a break dude. How is taxing a product equal to "telling them how to live their life, what to eat, what to drive, what kind of house they should live in, etc., etc., etc." Isn't 2009 a bit early to start screaming "1984!?"
Look at the issue like an economist would. There are products out there that when used or consumed by millions of Americans, are guaranteed (there is no question about this) they are guaranteed to increase the amount of money that will need to be spent on their healthcare. I would love to hear your argument that taxing cigarettes has been bad for Americans. Cigarettes at 75 cents per pack vs. $5...which one do you think will result in much higher rates of lung cancer, COPD, and sky-rocketing healthcare costs?
?? The taxing of cigarettes has saved American taxpayers billions of dollars.
The traditional comeback is, "well, if you don't have the cash to pay for your healthcare needs, too bad." My next question is, what do you do when the bodies start piling up outside emergency rooms? If your answer is, "Well, that'll be motivation to go out and work to earn money." If that's your line of thinking, hey, that's your right, but I think it's fucked up.

Yeah, it's sad that you don't see any improvement.
Relations between several countries AND the USA are better now than a year ago.
Obviously that's not an improvement to those who only focus on US politics.
But for the world outside the USA (there is one after all), it's kinda a big deal.....
Well I guess it's probably a big deal for a lot of Cubans in the USA that relations between USA and Cuba are better than before...

And it came out your pals, the speculators intentionall drove up the price of Oil when everyone was screaming, "oh, its suppy and demand sg, supply and demand". Give me a fucking break, its so corrupt. What about Goldman Sachs making a huge profit right after the bail out. Can I smell cooking the books? I don't trust wall street, its all rigged.

I agree, back in 2001 we should have been there, but not now. Who are we fighting? What are we fighting? Why are we fighting? The troops are fucking exhausted. Their wives are divorcing them because they have hardly seen their husbands for 6 years. The enemy are crazy fucks that us cell phones and box cutters. There is no "army". We fucked up in 2001 by getting off track with Iraq, now lets not fuck up more. You know why we are in Afghanistan? Its good for business. The people that make tanks and jets and stuff. Its good for them. You know, their friends. Jarmo, don't buy into this shit, and they like Obama cause frankly he is a pansy unlikely to really do anything even if he is pissed. I am glad you find him nice. The military is still going to be the military, not too much will change, just that Obama will be the face of it.

There already exists a sales tax in most states that, presumably, is applied to basketballs and footballs.
And it isn't undemocratic, first of all. It may seem rude or impolite, but undemocratic? Second, I very much doubt any of this has anything to do with how people look. More so that obesity is an epidemic than that it won't get you on the cover of Glamour. The idea here is simple. You put a small tax on sugary drinks. That tax goes a decent distance toward offsetting the cost of healthcare and, as a bonus, perhaps some people lose some weight and get healthier because of it. They lower their risk of diabetes, maybe? They're not telling you you have to lose weight. They're telling you that you'll be healthier if you do (provided that you're overweight in the first place).
On the other hand, the Nazis used to inject chemicals into the eyes of their victims to see if they could be made a different color. So, yeah. This is pretty close to that.

If more conservatives (and liberals, for that matter) railed against the military-industrial complex enough to make it change, I daresay this country and world would be a better place.
This is one of the areas where I really disagree with the President. He campaigned on strengthening our military, because you can't possibly just have a military sized for defense...you have to be able to invade half the fucking world. I'm sure some would say "yeah, but we're using it, so it was needed" but the fact that escapes them is that the reason we need it is because of the last time we used it. Why did 9/11 happen? Well, among other things, we put troops in Arabia...and never took them out (and that's really the kicker).

Not just fucked up, but downright idiotic. The idea that poor people choose to be poor is beyond my comprehension. I really don't get it. Some believe in the market controlling all, yet when people are poor it's their own fault? Yeah, because everyone can be management, and no one labor, right? It's such a joke.

He can turn it around, but so far, unimpressed.
I am being objective here. I see no "improvement" since Bush, and that is sad.
Health Care is a debacle, but I'm not sure that's Obama's fault. Congressional Dems are squabbling, the GOP is making shit up (seriously...some guy told my grandparents that under this plan they'd just let old people die...you know...to cut costs!
). Anyway, I'm withholding judgment on this until it gets done or dies. It's a big bill, and it takes time.
The Beer summit was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. He made a mistake answering that question in the first place, and the President isn't responsible for negotiating between every wrongly arrested black man in America and the cop who did it. That would take an entire new Department, headed by the Secretary of Driving-While-Black.
The stimulus hasn't failed. It's just getting started. It's only like 10% distributed, as I understand it. What if ya only put 10% of your junk in some lady before she decries you as bad in the sack? That hardly seems fair!
To where and from where are troops going? He promised fewer in Iraq and more in Afghanistan. I haven't seen any exact numbers lately, though I know that the Status of Forces Agreement has changed our Iraq presence in recent weeks.
He hasn't been as transparent as I'd have liked, though after the iron curtain of Bush/Cheney, anything is an improvement.
He's signed some good laws, such as the reinstatement of SCHIP (healthcare for kids) and Fair Pay. Foreign policy has been dramatically improved (it's handy when foreign leaders don't want to avoid you like the plague).
