Looks like the GOP can't stand the thought of Obama actually being like the rest of us everyday Americans. Rather than talk to us like a bunch of ten year olds a la Bush style, he talks to the country like a group of adults. What an amazing concept. Rather than  talk down to us with some sort of horseshit used car salesman lingo, he explains current events articulately in everyday terminology that the average guy can understand.

This is why the GOP have been voted out since 06 and the Dems put into power. While you are at it, try to actually come up with a solution. I think you have mistaken how democracy is supposed to work. The Bush era GOP walked lockstep never questioning the devastatingly stupid errors along the journey. A party that questions each others actions and what is best for the country does not mean it is a party divided, but rather one that is intelligent enough to question what is best for all.

Sorry, it's a shared responsibility and you know it.  The Republicans let pay-go (pay as you go, ya know, not spending what you don't have) lapse in '02 on purpose.  They spent like drunken sailors, gave huge tax breaks disproportionately to the very rich, AND decided it was a good idea to do all this at a time of war which costs a lot of money.

It's not just Wall Street.  In my eyes, giving people making millions, hundreds of millions of dollars a year huge tax breaks at a time we were fighting a war and running up a huge deficit...yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

I'm not so much for a wall for dealing with immigration issues.  Now...an extremely violent drug war in a neighboring state?  That's an entirely different matter. 

Personally, I think we should legalize drugs and tax the shit out of them. 

Think about the "gas tax holiday" argument from last spring/summer.  The point was that the supply and demand curves were meeting at the price that equalled the price + taxes, thus doing away with the gas tax would cause the price to rise to meet a profit maximization for that level of demand.  The basic argument was that, by doing away with such a tax, we'd essentially pay the same amount but instead of the government getting some of that money to pay for roads and whatnot, ALL of it would go to Big oil and the retailers. 

Now...apply that argument to drugs, but in reverse.  If supply meets demand and maximizes profit at the current prices, then what happens if you legalize and tax heavily?  Well, initially demand rises, because there are some people who'd do it if it were legal.  But still in the fairly short term, that high drug price PLUS a high tax means demand drops a LOT.  Assuming the tax is a flat fee (by weight), and not a percentage, the price BEFORE tax would have to fall by a LOT to again maximize profits.  Presumably, it would fall to the price at which illegal drugs currently sell...the only difference is that most of the money would now be going to the government for various causes.  And, it goes without saying, that also means a LOT of money would no longer be going to drug lords in Mexico and other places (notably, Afghanistan, as well!).

As an illegal trade, all of the money made from selling drugs goes to the illegal drug "industry".  None goes to legit retailers.  Nothing is taxed.  And, of course, we spend billions to lock up non-violent stoners.  It's a colossal waste of time, money, and effort fighting a "war on drugs".
