It was the "white Man" who elected a black President. IF that isn't sign that we've seen the light, what the hell is?
When the "white man" stops patting himself on the back for electing a black president is when things will settle down. It shouldn't be an exception to the norm.

To hear an American President talk about social responsibility, leading through honour and not sacrificing values for security
There's a lot of responsibility being taken on all the bailout after bailout after bailout. CEO's are getting their big buyouts and the companies are crashing and they start crying for their hand out from the government. Don't forget all the mortgages that failed and are continuing to fail cause people can't pay their bills. Lots of responsibility being taken there too.

Not for nothing though- it would be like telling Jews to "get over" the Holocaust. It was only what, 40 or 50 years ago and some places not even that long ago when these words rang terribly true. These people's ancestors were packed onto a ship and dragged into this country into slavery starting back when, in the 1600's? They were still fighting not to have to sit in the back of the bus, when, in the 1950's? 300 and some odd years to finally feel some equality can take it's toll, ya know.
So best to fight racism with more racism. Oh that's real intelligent.

I don't see anyone patting anyone else on the back. I thought they elected the person they felt could do the best job. I think other people make it out to be more than what it is.
White people are the biggest terrorist group in the history of the world IMO. Native Americans, Slaves, Jews.... the white skin man has been absolute evil
BUT
there comes a time when you have to take responsibility and be held accountable for your own actions. There are still racist white people no doubt, but I guarantee the majority race that hurts black america is black america.
Gangs, drugs, violence, Hip Hop culture, I will concede the white man has done unforgivable acts, but there comes a time u don't forget but you can't use that as a crutch till the end of time.

Also, wasn't it black Africans that were the majority of slave traders? So they sold their own right? Still, no accountability.

so two wrongs make a right?
Either way, we are severely off topic at this point.
While I firmly believe one is responsible for themselves there is also the idea that so many years of oppression can also bring out the worst in some.
I can only hope that in a few years that conversations like this begin to dissipate and that no one cares that Barack Obama is black, that they care if he can do the damn job and start to fix the trash that was made of this country for the past 8 years.
We need to not celebrate his black-ness but whatever change and good he can bring to this country.

Everybody sells their own. Black people got nothing to do with their current situation for the simple fact that they got no power. One half white poster boy doesn't cut it.
Telling groups of people to "take responsibility for themselves" is really absolving yourself of some conceived responsibility. The downtrodden black man is not going to crawl out of the Ghetto on a whim. It doesn't work like that. Either the white ruling class allows them proper equal rights or nothing happens. Clearly we're content with having cheap gardeners and cab drivers, so we choose to not give a fuck. Not really.

D, I love ya buddy, but your latest posts have been flat-out misleading when it comes to race relations. Perhaps it's my background on the subject that allows me to get all riled up by your repeated false assertions. As soon as you live the life of an African-American male, that yes, in 1999 was still earning 81 cents for every $1 a white man earns...not to mention the African-American woman who's getting 65 cents for every white man's dollar, perhaps we can then quibble over a passage that reminds folks to do right...but I guess in your eyes in the last 9 years, it's virtually equal, eh?
It's not very often I agree with Polluxlm, but in his post he makes good sense.
"Still, no accountability." Have you listened to one word Barack Obama has uttered D?
So Drew, you felt insulted? How in the world is saying, "and white, do what's right," racist? Are you fucking kidding me???
just askin'.
Might I add, if today we were seeing the inauguration of Republican Colin Powell, I'd still have tears running down my cheeks. I'd still have an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and joy.
btw, Bandita, nice posts, here in Delaware there was still racial segregation into the 1970's. I've worked with scumbags who used the n-word freely. I've seen injustice first-hand in the 21st century. It's quite disgusting.
D, perhaps we could agree on this...it's nice knowing African-Americans across the country are seeing that anything is possible. With hard work, intelligence, and determination, anything is possible! That is pretty damn cool and something I think we can both agree on, yes?

I think today was an historic day. I think it was about time that an African-American became President. I think it eases discrimination for a lot of Americans. As a disabled American, I feel that this will help to change perceptions. It was a great day to be proud!

Why do "yellow" people need to be "mello?" What is that all about? Why is this guy trying to label people by colors and race? If this would have been a speaker for a Libertarian or Republican candidate, the media and democrats would be up in arms and calling an outrage!
I think a lot of white people can stand up and say we do what's right a lot of times. That guy today is just stuck in his past little world. It's apparent from his speech.

Who knows? It was all in good fun! It's a day of celebration and the guy added some much-needed levity to an otherwise solemn ceremony. He didn't say that we whites don't do any right. My God, I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. Yeah, if I dealt with that kind of injustice, I too might have a little chip on my shoulder...
seeing the Freedom Riders was amazing. The folks of all colors who marched for justice in the South in the '60's. Getting spit on, called N-lover, etc. risking their lives for justice...then seeing them 40+ years later...seeing their younger mugshots, and then their elderly faces. So inspiring.
May I also give a thumbs-up to Rick Warren...while I disagree with his stance on homosexuality, I thought he did a great job today. He was moving to me, and it was a helluva reach across partisan lines for Barack to have him do the convocation. It was nice to watch and listen.

So your saying as long as it's done in good fun, racism is alright. It's ok for people who have been victims of racism to fire back at anyone and everyone in good fun.

Drew, ease up there pal. You are really starting to sound like sour grapes...(do sour grapes make sounds?) Oh well, seriously, if you interpreted that as "firing back" you have got to be kidding me. You've got to be smarter than that. Did he advocate racism? Gimme a break dude.

Whether he advocates racism or not, it was a pretty racism part in his speech to me.

you're grasping at straws. let's agree to disagree....but I think we can both agree on the fact that poem sucked.
I thought John Williams' specially made for this occasion composition was brilliant! Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma...legendary stuff right there. How they were able to play in that cold...very cool.

Loved the shout outs to more science and to the "non-believers". Has a president ever recognized the atheists in this country in a major speech? Amazing.

Yes, I noticed that too. Great stuff.
I'd have to guess the "non-believer" line is new...if not, then I'd have to guess either Slick Willie or Bush...but in an inauguration speech? It's gotta be a first.

It was a good speech... He reached out to everyone. He has to. He took a firm stance on terror and defense which may have annoyed some hard left and reached out to non-believers and sought to redirect from the last admin which annoyed some hard right. All in all it was a good speech but not a breath taking speech. What happened to the the last Dem who restated a Bushism regarding terror and if it's war you want you will get it and the US will not lose or give in? He did a good job. I think he realized the enormity of the job and task at hand and was nervous during the oath but so what. I wish him well but his campaign ideology is a different story. Then again campaign speech and office speech are worlds apart. We'll see what will happen in the future...Maybe flying cars, no more inner city crime and no oil or just more of the same with a different approach. I've been around awhile and know how the inner sanctum works if you will. Prove me wrong and I'll be happy. Whatever I wish him well because if he does well so do I. At least I hope...
