From what I read, his standing orders were if the captain was ever in imminent danger, that the military was to use any means to get him out.

I thought Obama did a phenomenal job with the pirate situation...He really surpised me.  I just figured he would find a way to blame America for their piracy, apologize, give them citizenship and health benefits.  Obama handled this perfectly.  Very proud of him. Good Stuff.. ok

Why the President had to approve this mission is beyond me.  Doesn't this happen every day around america in our big cities?  I think it is so badass this panned out, but why was the president's approval necessary?  More red tape?

If this happened under Bush's watch you'd be singing his praises and you know it.

Ummm, no, it wouldn't be mentioned under Bush's watch.  Infact, we had a daring rescue mission in Iraq where we got that young Army girl out of the hospital in a raid or something.  Bush got no credit, it was a military operation.  Dude, I am not saying anything bad about Barack, I just didn't know we needed his permission for this.

That was in a war zone, so of course it was a military operation.

This was not in a war zone.

Seems pretty much like a war zone to me..... But so does parts of South Central Los Angeles back in 1993..

We can't start classifying every instance of criminal activity as a war.

It could become a war zone, but I don't think it quite qualifies just yet.

1st, Bodhi, I give you major props for telling it like it is.

2nd, it was a very nice weekend at my in-laws for Easter and my wife's birthday.  Yes, my in-laws are Republicans who claim to be Independents, but how nice was that news break-in during the Masters declaring the captain was saved?  It was even nicer when on the news later we saw together that the authorization to use deadly force was given by the President on Friday.  I am amazed that people thought he'd be a pussy in foreign affairs.  He stuck by his early campaign answer about going after Al Qaeda wherever they were, even if it was in Pakistan.  AWESOME!

3rd, my father-in-law is an old corrections officer/fire chief who is a gun owner.  One of the things we agree on is strict gun control (not making guns illegal), just banning assault weapons, imposing hard jail time on offenders, closing the gun show loophole, and mandatory background checks so nutjobs can't get their hands on guns.  60 Minutes after the Masters golf tournament was actually a fun time.  It gets tense when polarizing crap gets put out there.  This weekend was a wonderful weekend!!!

A4P, that is awesome you had a great time with your Right Wing nut job inlaws!  I am glad Obama didn't stand in the way, outside of maybe Jimmy Carter, I don't know a president that wouldn't have given authorization.

You'd be surprised S Guns...we had a lot of isolationist presidents in the past.

btw, I really shouldn't paint my in-laws as right-wing nutjobs.  They support gun control, they're pro-choice, pro-evolution...honestly, I think they picked the brand a long time ago and have stuck with the "patriotic" party.

Republicans are better at marketing their brand, and have been for some time.

its easier for them...Republican/conservative ideas are usually shared by MOST republicans, whereas liberalism tends to be more diverse and sometimes all over the place.  Pro-life, Small government, low taxes, how many self described republicans would be against those things?

As far as small government goes, I'd say that all their voters are for it, all their politicians claim to be for it, and most of their politicians are not at all for it in practice.

If there's one thing I've come to believe, it's that neither side really rolls back government all that much...not even the other side's toys.

Sorry.  My in-laws are extremely Republican.  They are pro-choice and support gun control. (not banning guns, just common sense legislation)

My biggest bone to pick with the Left is with liberal judges that are soft on crime.

well there are exceptions to the rule of course, but a perfect example is look at all of the tea parties that happened today..im willing to bet that 99% of the people who went to those agree with each other on just about every issue..

i think its fair to say that MOST republicans are not pro choice...
