Rolling Stone: 50 Best Albums of 2008

"Axl Rose has not lost his appetite for disorder. Democracy could never live up to every expectation, but it is audacious and unhinged: the mass of strings, choir and Mellotron in "There Was a Time"; the Spanish guitar and blaxploitation funk of "If the World." It's hard rock without apology ? which is enough."

Chinese Democracy
clocks in at number 12.

Nuff respect. Though would have been nicer to see it in the top 10.

Some people are never happy!
If at the start of the year you were told that Chinese Democracy was going to be in Rolling Stones top 50 albums
released
this year you would have been over the fucking moon.

Should've been #1 because let's face it it's an opus. No one in Pop music in my opinion has ever done that.

Knowing Axl, they were probably told that those were badly unfinished demos and won't make the album....

I'd feel pretty comfortable arguing Chinese against most of the albums above them, but I think the list does a good job of collecting different styles and tastes and trying to rank them, somehow. I mean, how can you compare Chinese Democracy and the Fleet Foxes? Bon Iver and Death Magnetic? So, as much as I hate Rolling Stone, they deserve some credit for trying to merge all of those selections--most magazines never deviate from a niche.

Which is I guess why the first thought I had was "they should have switched CD with Death Magnetic."

It could definitely have clocked in over Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes...though both are decent albums...neither are top ten material.
at least GNR faired better than AC/DC who got beat by the Jonas Brothers.
Otherwise...a pretty average list. Nothing too unexpected...

Death Magnetic beating CD on that list = epic fail.
It's a record industry whore list, nothing more. I've never even heard of half the top ten and don't wish to either.
