Use Your Illusion I (1991)

« on: November 27, 2008, 01:46:20 AM »

What songs from the album to we know of for sure?

Just thinking about this...

Isn't Oklahoma a song that was in the mix?

What about that song "Checkmate" isn't that a song... just curious as to how all these years only certain song titles leaked out.

I would like to know what else is in the chinese stew

I guess its hard to call anything an outtake - especially with so many studio sessions and supposedly 2 albums yet to be culled from them. I mean, wasn't Catcher originally supposed to be on one of the later ones?

Silkworms.

I've heard people referring to Oh My God as an outtake.

I'm positive I read something about Oklahoma becoming something else. Maybe even TWAT. I can't remember what tho.

I think Oklahoma is Riad....despite what people claim. Josh Freese is credited as writing the drum arrangement so the song has to come from 1999 or before. I could get in to why the lyrics fit with what Axl described to Rolling Stone about Oklahoma but it would take too much effort.

"[Oklahoma] was inspired by a court date with ex-wife Erin Everly. 'I was sitting in my litigation with my ex-wife, and it was the day after the bombing, [April 20th, 1995]' Rose remembers with a wince. 'We had a break, and I'm sitting with my attorneys with a sort of smile on my face, more like a nervous thing - it was like, 'Forgive me, people, I'm having trouble taking this seriously.' It's just ironic that we're sitting there and this person is spewing all kinds of things and 168 people just got killed. And this person I'm sitting there with, she don't care. Obliterating me is their goal.'" (Axl, Rolling Stone, 2000)

"As the far as the songs go: 'Oklahoma' was pretty much written by the time they got to the studio. Axl wrote that with inspiration from the Oklahoma City bombing (more as a tribute to those who died, if I'm not mistaken)." (Dave Dominguez, Sp1at, 02/07/05)

Song after song combines the edgy hard rock force and pop smarts of vintage Guns N Roses with surprisingly modern and ambitious music textures. In addition to the album's almost grungy title track, tentative song titles include 'Catcher in the Rye,' 'I.R.S,' 'The Blues',  'Oklahoma' - heard tonight only as an instrumental,  and 'TWAT,' which he says stands for 'there was a time.'" (Rolling Stone, 01/00)

Who knows how many of these were coded titles so that if a name leaked out of what someone like Beltrami was working on, no one would know what track exactly.  Madagascar and TWAT I could see as being the songs "Seven" and "Thyme," due to the use of samples from Se7en and of course Time = Thyme.

The "Scraped' lyrics fit what "Atlas Shrugged" would be but U can never tell as the album has a certain theme and all the lyrics kind of fit together from song to song.

Yeah, I was not a fan of Silkworms but after hearing what they did on Chinese Democracy, I have all the faith in the world that Axl & crew will nail it come release time.

The lyrics for Riad certainly fit for a court battle.  I wouldn't be surprised if Oklahoma was the beginnings of Riad.

« Reply #19 on: November 27, 2008, 06:28:26 PM »

Ahhh, speculation.  I found myself just days after getting my hands on CD thinking 'This is great - I want more, whats next?'...felt bad, or guilty for being so greedy, like some kind of dope fiend...but now I can see I am not the only one.  I guess its just one of the evils of human nature...never satisfied!  hihi

I would love to know every little detail of production of CD, and unfortunately I think we will have to wait for Axl's autobiography, unless he breaks form and gives a crazy-in-depth interview.
