one year ago, i was having a very tough time trying to calm my anxiety down and not to listen to the leaked songs from CD, specially this one.
Chinese Democracy is the best GNR album ever. The wait was damn worth.
Me too. I am so glad that I never heard a leaked version of TIL.
I dont believe there was one. TIL was one of three songs that were not leaked or played live before.
you're wrong on both things.
the track ''this i love'' leaked 4 or 5 days before the official release date, and in this same thread there's a proof that an early version of TIL was played live back in 1992 at least twice.

didn't axl say his materials were refused by them?
Axl said whenever he showed interest in Slash's stuff, Slash refused to carry on working on it....
its all a big mystery and shouting match between the two, really
Axl said he was specifically told ''no lyrics, no melodies, just sing on them or fuck off''.
Thank God Axl never put ''just vocals'' to Slash's usual horseshit

both things? what is the other one ?
I dont count 4 or 5 days as a leak.
Sure its a leak, but it came from the album going to stores, not some dude with rough versions of the song.
AS for a piano intro with the TIL melody .... I dont count that as a leak either.

the band wanted the song to see the light of the day in november 23rd 2008, and the song was available before that date. i dont care how many days before, or the things you ''count'' as valid or not: it leaked.
and yes, an early version of the song was played live in 1992 at least twice, but its highly possible it was played several times (just hadnt the time to check my other boots from that leg of the UYI tour).
basically, no matter what you do count or dont count, these two things are facts, and both can be proven easily.

I give you the first one, and just because it technically is a leak. (Though I'll sustain its not really one, as all albums nowadays leak a few days before release) However I wont give you the live thing. A piano intro is NOT a song. If you can find me a version with axl singing the whole song I will accept its a fact. But you cant, so no, its not a fact.

Well this is about apatite type songs but from del's interview of February
axl : Also, anything I had written I felt was in similar directions then, during and after the 'Illusions' tour was more than rejected by both Slash and Duff at a time, which greatly helped destroy whatever confidence I may have had at the time.

Yea, but weren't they on GNR's myspace before the 23rd? I remember my wife going on about how great the song was and I told her I didn't wanna hear it until the album was in my hands! I forget if it was only a few days or a week, but to say that it leaked 4-5 days before would not be totally correct considering GNR released it on their myspace.

about playing this song live:
this is probably very hard to handle for Axl vocally. and not to screw it up it might be more safe not to play it every show but only very few special occasions....

Seems like communication really broke down at this point cos the stories we have heard are very different.

the CD version we know from "This I Love" rarely is in any kind of "similar directions". assuming it wasnt a rocker in the beginning when Axl wrote and possibily recorded a 1st version of it in 1992....we dont have any official word from the other old Guns that they even have heard it, let alone worked on it.
edit:
"June 15th, 1992 - Duff and Gilby go to the Townhouse recording studio in Shepherd's Bush to work on a track for Duff's solo album.
Later Axl and Dizzy work on another song at a different studio."
http://www.heretodaygonetohell.com/history/history92.php
might be that one?

wasn't an early version of this song just said to be heard on old boots?
and when they refused afd type songs, do you think they would have accepted this?

Who is "They"?
Axl. Slash and Duff clearly have different idea's of what was going on during that period after the illusion tour.
Axl apparently wasnt around that much either.
bottom line: None of us will ever know who rejected what. But some VR songs and some CD songs definitly started at that time.

^ Hardly. TIL had the potential to be a great song, but it missed the mark. Axl's vocals, lyrics and the keyboards are amazing. The guitar solo is too weird and the drums sound as though they are echoing in a room somewhere. I'll give credit to Robin with pushing Axl to include this song on CD, otherwise we might have never heard it, but Buckethead should have done the solo. Just my opinion.
See the solo on Sorry for reference.

I don't know why would Richard play this solo. Sounds logical to me to think in DJ Ashba playing it.

Funny, I take that exactly to prove otherwise. IMO, Robin's solo in TIL is way better than Sorry solo. Just my opinion too.

IMHO, Robin's solo at This I Love is one of the 3 best guitar solos in the complete GNR discography.
And that instrumental passage where the Robin solo is included (the piano, orchestra and harp ''behind'' robin's guitar) is probably the most incredible and emotional moment I've ever hear from Guns, only comparable to the extended instrumental part of TWAT and November Rain's outro.
Instrumentally, TIL is flawless. Simply perfect. If there is ANYTHING to criticize to TIL (I dont really think there are critics to make) are axl's vocals at some points of the song.
