Word of mouth is and will always be a powerful tool if something is good. I own the sound system at a club, and for the past number of shows at the end of the night I'll play CD in it's entirety.
"What is that?"
"That sounds like Axl, is that the new Guns?"
"Dude, I heard the new song on whatever radio station."
You tell your friends the truth, the album is really good. I would say I have a spot for the old GN'R and maybe even went into buying the album trying to find a reason not to like it. It's hard not to like something that is really good. So will it "hang around", of course, the album fucking rocks!
Nice. I notice many Touch Tunes Juke boxes at bars where advertising CD. So everytime I get out, I make sure to pick a few songs from the album, pay extra money to "make mine first". I have had a few people ask about the songs....

I've generated more then a few "word of mouth sales" for the album.

The favorite thing that has happened so far is a couple guys that were playing in the band I had last weekend come up to me as "Better" is starting.
We start talking about the album and they are telling me they think the new stuff is so much better (no pun intended). They we're probably 5 yr. old when Appetite came out, so they didn't live through that hype. Then during the final pre-chourus (All that I wanted...) there are three or four of us air guitaring the insane sweeps, and when the sweeps finish going into the chorus we all look at each other and go "YEAH!".
That is what makes a good song.

If anyone remembers Greatest Hits , only sold 100,000+ copies its 1st week of release. And well it stuck around 3-4 years on the Billboard charts and sold over 3+ million copies. I have told this to many critics...that Guns n Roses could be this type of band who sells albums without any promotion. And its a great feat thus far. To sell as well as it has worldwide with really no real promotion....its a hell of a feat in todays era.
this is true

Either one of two things are the case, as I see it: 1) Axl is indifferent to album sales for some reason unbeknownst to us, or 2) There is some plan in place we are not aware of.
The best thing for Axl and the band to do at this point, if they are interested in helping sales, is to tour.

My guess is 2), that he has decided to let the BB deal run its course and then re-release CD with full promotion, tour, etc.

I think not many people deserve to have the CD, cuz i had see so many bad coments and so many haters and as a true GNR fan Im always stand up for them, one of my friends after he bought the CD me told that the band sucks and Axl voice sounds like shit and he was laughin in my face cuz he knows Im a big fan so I told him to throw away the CD and go fuck himself, but I know the Cd fuckin rocks!...and Axls voclas are great!...and I know isnt only my opinion, I really think that the people who have the CD is because they deserve to have it, offcourse Im always promoting my band, anywhere I go, I dont buy gifts for my friend's bdays, I buy them Chinese Democracy! and I think is the best gift I can give to somebody!
....and for Valentines im givin the CD to my gf!...lol...I think if they do a tour soon, sales gonna go up....cheers!

As soon as that video is released, business will pick up.
And after things settle down after the video, the tour will help things out again.

January is a horrible month for Cd's. U know if GNR message forums could unite and everyone with CD's price down go out and buy a couple more copies. we could drive it back into the top 10.

In Canada last week Chinese Democracy charted at #22, while Greatest Hits moved all the way up to the #36 spot!

Why?
I don't think that's what it's all about.
I love suggesting and recomending the album and it's fuckin' perfect as a gift for a friend or foe, but it's just crazy and utterly rediculus for all online nerds to mobilize and go out and buy another copy or two.
How much sale would you think something like this would generate? 5-10.000? Tops.. Ain't worth it... It would just breed more bitchers who will make sure to tell the whole world why Axl owes'em shit etc.

I don't think that's what it's all about.
because of the possible price down and aquarian friends or pisceans. plus it'd be fun like those net votes.
nothing to do with what's it all about. you get the goods and fun then no 'best buy owes us!' shit.
