Again, using sales number from 1991 to say this album is a bust.   As Prince once said..." the only competition I have is me against  the past"..

I think it is amazing what the Illusions did the first week.......it is 17 years later without original material........not many bands could pull off moving as many copies.  And thats not even considering the download age we now live in.

If you think about it tho, it is pretty badass i guess since we only got the promotion that out thier and still sold this many copies. what really sucks is that, atleast at my local station, everytime gnr or axl is mentioned it always seemed negitive. so that doesnt help either i guess. What is the amount of albums that need to be sold for CD to reach gold, plat, 2x plat etc in the U.S.Huh

Gold is 500,000

Platinum is 1,000,000, everything from there is measured in millions i.e. 2x platinum is 2 million

Yeah, but certifications are based on albums shipped, not sold, correct?

Ali

Gold is based on units sold but platinum is based on units shipped.  So I guess CD is not yet gold, but already platinum  hihi

Chinese Democracy enters Billboard album chart

Guns N' Roses "Chinese Democracy" sold 261, 191 copies in the USA during its first week and entered the Top 200 album chart at #3 and at #1 on the Rock Album Chart.

The album had the highest unit sales number of any Interscope Geffen A&M debut in 2008. In comparison, the last Guns N' Roses full length album "The Spaghetti Incident?" debuted at #4 on album chart with 189,648 sales in November 1993.

The comparison with TSI is not entirely correct, CD had a Sunday debut instead of TSI which started at the regular Tuesday, a bit apples vs oranges as far as units sold.....

Still good to see that on the Interscope roster nobody sold more in it's first week than CD.

But was TSI issued during Thanksgiving weekend (I really don't know)? I believe that that should be taken into consideration for Chinese Democracy as well. That's one day that they wouldn't have been able to sell much; other than online sales, there wouldn't be many sales on Thanksgiving.

S0 have I got these figures about right:

US 260,000
UK 150,000
Germany 100,000
Canada 70,000
Brazil 50,000
Finland 30,000
Australia 20,000
NZ 15,000

If so that make 695,000 copies sold in those territories. I'd be interested to see the figures for some other South American and European countries. If UMG already got it's money back from the Best Buy deal then all these other sales are a bonus surely? I don't think anyone at UMG will be losing any sleep worrying about this.

When taking into account the population, that's the equivalent of 280,000 in the USA.
Whereas the New Zealand (roughly a fifth of the population of Australia) total is the equivalent of 1.1 million sold in the US

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but Green Day's American Idiot sold the same amount of copies as Chinese Democracy did in its opening week.  It went on to sell 15 million records worldwide, win a Grammy and be adored by the critics.

The same thing will happen to Chinese Democracy. Just wait...

Didn't have much promotion here and have not heard it on radio here in the French part. But maybe that is different in the German part where they like their rock.
