Because there isn't much promotion here in the United States and not many fans listen to the radio. They hear the songs on VH1 , TV commercials or hell...during a TV show. Its been said that what helped Chris Daughtry's album weeks after it debuted to go to #1 was the single "Its Not Over" being constantly played on TV for the Fox show Prison Break.

To be for Azoff to help "Better" or "Scraped" would be to plug em onto a TV show thats returning in the mid-season. Like a 'Scrubs" on ABC. Constantly having the song play to it will get fans to perhaps want the song/album.

Either way when it crosses 500,000 gold , thats a hell of a thing to see an album sell that much thru 862 stores. Thats a feat that I doubt many bands could pull off that doesn't release original material in 14 years. We all should applaud Axl Rose. It had a better shot in a Wal-Mart with its 4,000+ stores. But to do it thru Best Buy. Fucking incedible.

47,000 isn't too bad considering it sold only around 56,000 last week or something like that. Guess, it just becomes a waiting game from here on out. Hope the video for better is released soon lol.

Chinese Democracy is 10th in Switzerland.

Week1 : #1
Week2 : #4
Week3 : #10

It's very good 'cause there's really NO promotion in Switzerland. Nothing at all.

I think it might consistently sell around 50,000 in the U.S. for quite a while.  I think the sales overall will be just fine.

That's a respectable 3rd week of sales.  Here's the running total on ChiDem

Week #1 - 261,000
Week #2 - 57,000 (78.5% drop)
Week #3 - 47,000 (18% drop)

To compare...here's how Black Ice faired its first 3 weeks... (to be truthfully honest...I'm very suspicious of Walmart's sales numbers for AC/DC and the Eagles last year...both seemed rather inflated.)

Week #1 - 784,000
Week #2 - 271,000 (65% drop)
Week #3 - 160,000 (41% drop)

And Metallica's Death Magnetic...(although the first week of sales for Metallica was only 3 days)

Week #1 - 490,000
Week #2 - 337,000 (31% drop)
Week #3 - 132,000 (61% drop)

I'd include Nickleback's numbers...but I have too much respect for GNR, Metallica, and AC/DC.

I completely agree with that statement.  I am beyond dumbfounded that so many people really care about this new AC/DC record.

Why is anyone that surprised by the AC/DC numbers?

I mean, yeah, more than most would expect, but you'd have to be crazy not to have expected it would be a major success...

One of the biggest bands in history doing their first album in 8 years (and quite possibly there last album ever), deliver exactly what people expected and promoted it really well with a good promotional partner... It's a great result for them, but really not that surprising.

The album's already double platinum in the US in 3 months...I don't see the promotion being that great.  A lot of people I know had no idea they had a new album out.

Stiff Upper Lip barely went platinum

Ballbreaker went double platinum...but that was 13 years ago and it was coming off the very successful Razor's Edge.

Your numbers are correct... But I'm not sure how they  negate any of the reasons I gave for it being unsurprising it sold well.

And with all due respect to your friends, an album doesn't go double platinum in this day and age without being well promoted (and I include in that the instore job walmart did that people wouldn't necessarily even be aware of until they hit the store, but that no doubt motivated MANY impulse purchases).

As for Ballbreaker, it was 5 years after the Razor's edge and followed the seismic shift in music trends that occurred with grunge.
Two million under those circumstances was a huge effort.

Why can't ppl just admit that Axl just doesn't appeal to masses like he once did? Many GNR fans lost interest in them during the 15 year period and now when they realize that there's a new GNR album out I think many of them will be put off by the fact that it's not the same band anymore. Axl isn't Guns N' Roses to most people you know. Anyway, I still think CD is alright, not on the level of other GNR recordings but I wasn't really expecting that anyways.
