I'm very curious as to what this means, and what to expect. Any ideas as what to this "monumental campaign" could be? Surely a release like Chinese democracy is a release very out of the ordinary, and even though the name of the album itself will sell it in massive ammounts, I'm very curious to know if they have something special in store to accompany or lead up to the release. Ideas?

For those who don't know, this is what I'm talking about. From the official Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy press release:

?The release of Chinese Democracy marks a historic moment in rock n? roll,? said co-managers Irving Azoff and Andy Gould. ?We?re launching with a monumental campaign developed by Gary Arnold and the Best Buy team that matches the groundbreaking sound of the album itself. Guns N? Roses fans have every reason to celebrate, for this is only the beginning.?

he is saying that they will be promoting the hell out of the album. It has nothing to do with any follow up albums

Id say the promotion will pick up about 2 weeks before the release date

I'm just very curious as to what excactly that promotion will be.
What is the norm and what is to be expected for an album of CD's caliber?

I think they might follow the marketing for AC/DC's album at least in the US

I didn't see or hear much of anything about that album from a marketing standpoint until a week or two before, then there was a blitz.  I saw ads for their album on TV a number of times during football games and their single Rock N' Roll Train getting played during highlight clips and what not

Given how successful that campaign was, we may see them hold back until next week and then let it go.  Best Buy will probably be pushing the album heavily all the way through Christmas

Some massive billboards of the album cover(s) would be awesome.

Good point.  This marketing strategy shows that people's attention spans are very short these days.

Hopefully people won't think it's a bike ad and all head off to Halfords...

Best Buy holiday ads traditionally start right after Halloween. Therefore, I'd expect to start seeing lots of ads during NFL games here in the U.S. Hopefully, one of them will be specifically about Chinese Democracy.
