i've never heard of a BMI, what do they do?

Broadcast Music, Incorporated (BMI) is a US performing rights organization. It collects license fees on behalf of its songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed.

uhh kind of. Artists basically sign up to get royalty checks, and organise like percentage splits of song composition.

BMI basically organise payment of royalties; that is, radio etc pay BMI every time they play a GNR song, and BMI pays the band (while taking a nice little admin fee for themselves)

Not the middle man (that would be the publisher and the record company); more like a third party. The song is played and then BMI has its say on behalf of the artist.
