Puh-leeease!  No, baldness is not a growing epidemic.

The fact is that society in general looks at hair-thinning and male-pattern baldness under a stronger microscope.  There are infomercials, commercials, etc. that push this shit all the time.  Rogaine, plugs, transplants, etc.

Baldness rates are the same...it's the number of folks who see it as a"problem" that has grown.   

btw, I've got a pretty damn good quaff.  From what I understand, you guys can bank on your hair-line/thickness by your mom's father.  Women's thinning hair is genetically based as well.  Yes, there are things that can cause hair loss, but most of the time, if they aren't genetic, if you change your ways, it comes back.  If it's genetic, oh well.

Funny how baldness rates have risen as people in general have become more vain/image-conscious.

My three brothers and I age 34-32 and me being 29 respectively stlll have thick heads of hair.

ya its hella complicated the gene can skip generations or not express itself even if you have it. of course there is no sure way to tell otherwise how would you explain cases of one brother having a full head of hair and the other being bald. there are tons of factors at work.

Uh, there's a difference between dying your hair using a box of hair dye you bought from a drug store, and going to a salon and having a PROFESSIONAL do it.

The dye you buy at a drug store is a far lower quality than what you'll get at a PROFESSIONAL salon

I dunno, the reason I started this topic is because both my parents and a few other adults have commented on how many balding young people they see nowadays. My parents were kids in the 60s and according to them (not saying they are right) you just didnt see kids balding so young in such high numbers.

My dad siad his friend was starting to bald in university and he was the only kid he ever saw at that age losing his hair. I look around my university and spot too many to count without even really looking

so just got me curious.....

Hey R, of all places to have to hear this, a HTGTH forum of all places, this has to be pretty tough to stomach...
your maternal grandma banged that plumber with the full head of hair!    "No Grandma, NOOOOO!!!" 

Seriously, somebody else mentioned it.  Genetics are a lot more complicated than just "getting baldness through one maternal grandpa."  However, the more male relatives you as a man have that are bald...that would probably put you at a much higher risk of being bald.  But again, who gives a shit?  It doesn't make you less smart, strong, or prone to dying earlier.

Please allow me to put forth some of my own personal observations working in a hospital.:
Alcoholics (or those temporarily completely drunk) seem to survive accidents sober folks don't. 
Alcoholics (^  ^             ^                ^           ^      ) seem to have a lot more accidents than sober folks.
and finally, I've noticed a lot of alcoholics tend to have more hair on their heads (males) at later stages of their lives.
I just thought those were interesting...again, like your dad's trip to campus, completely anecdotal and unscientific.

I have 3 uncles all balding on my mom's side but my dad had a full hairline............ and my aunt *father's side* is a hair dresser and said my hair was from my dad's side of the family....... so Maybe I dodged the bald bullet.
