Kevin Cogill, 27, of Culver City, who admitted to allowing public access to the songs on the Antiquiet blog, was arrested today on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws.
By Scott Glover, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

10:02 AM PDT, August 27, 2008
A man accused of posting nine previously unreleased songs by the rock band Guns N' Roses on a website where they could be accessed by the public was arrested at his home early today on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws, authorities said.

Kevin Cogill, 27, is accused of posting the songs, which were being prepared for commercial release, on the Internet blog Antiquiet in June, according to an arrest affidavit. The site received so much traffic after the songs were posted that it crashed, the affidavit states.

Cogill admitted to posting the songs when he was questioned by an FBI agent, according to the affidavit. He was arrested at his home in Culver City this morning and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles later today, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Craig Missakian.

Records are selling less and less because of these kinds of leaks.

People are losing their jobs.

It's naive to think that the record companies are just gonna sit and watch this happen without doing anything about it.

at least there's a whole lotta interrest surrounding the songs, band and record.. don't think the site would have crashed if there were some unreleased bon jovi songs posted instead of gnr's

the stupic blogger might havt thought "well there have been leaks before and i've never heard of anyone getting punished for it, i'll do it and take the credit for it"  real smart hihi

It still doesn't make it legal to steal music and put it on your web site.

As I said, the record company doesn't like it when you steal their property.

No surprise.  If he was dumb enough to give away unreleased music for free on his website from a band and album with this much invested in it, he just put a big red target on his back.  I'm sure UMG was pretty pissed and he made it an easy case by putting on his website and talking openly about it

People who can think see that it's pretty obvious this is the record company's work.

They're preparing to release one of the most talked about records in years, and people expect them to do nothing when shit like this happens?

Just because a few guys think they can steal music as they wish?

jarmo, be honest, on your mother's grave...have you listened to the leaks?

Arresting people is not the solution to this....it is very bad publicity for GnR and there will now be more people downloading the l;eaks and album(s) as a protest....remember Lars.

I'm sure there will be some disagreement amongst the mods/staff here, but....

I think there is a fundamental difference between downloading and listening to what is offered up AND actively procuring, posting, and hosting it.

I'm not sure the record company is as interested in "the rest of us" and is likely a LOT more interested in "patient zero"...at least that has been the precedent.

I look at it this way you couldn't walk into a McDonalds and go behind a counter and steal a hamburger and fries.  It's the same with music, I would like to see something were only the artist and a rep from the label only have copies and keep them in a safe or locked somewhere it couldn't leak.

Not any of the ones talked about in this article.

I heard a short snippet here and there in order to validate the clip being GN'R.

But no full songs or enough to form an opinion on the song.

I prefer to be surprised once the album is out. Instead of letting some people who have nothing to do with the album decide when I should hear the music.

I hope this is another case of the GN'R publicity machine grinding into life for an upcoming album.

Jarmo is right.  This is property of the record company and guns n' roses.  I write software and if any of my code got out there, I'd be pissed as well and definitely press charges.
