Street fair, kids' activities backed up the music at Lollapalooza

Musical highlights: Radiohead delivered a mix of new and old favorites, including House of Cards, Paranoid Android and Fake Plastic Trees on Friday. On Day 2, Lollapalooza organizer/musician Perry Farrell brought former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash onstage for a couple of songs, including a singalong rendition of Jane's Addiction's Jane Says. The crowd packed like sardines for Rage Against the Machine's frenetic set, which included Testify and Born of a Broken Man.

The wind-down: On Sunday, the Paul Green School of Rock students took to the kids' stage and played one of the loudest sets all weekend. Farrell and Slash made another joint appearance, but this time on the kids' stage and captivated the audience (adults, too!) with versions of Knockin' on Heaven's Door and Stevie Wonder's Superstition.

My sources are radiostations. I still call them rumors because I am not sure how credible they are. In any case, I am not starting any rumors.
Posted here for the ones interested. I thought it's ok to flavor it with my personal opinion.
Well, I think you're a real motherfucker! I'm sure you don't mind since it's just my personal opinion.
If you don't like Slash what the fuck are you doing on a GN'R board anyways? And if you're only here to support the "new" band stay out of the Ex-Gunners category.

I'll take this as a compliment.  Smiley
I don't know how old you are or since when you've been a fan. I have been (a pretty hardcore) one since 1991/1992. So, needless to say I used to be a Slash fan for a looong time. But the choices this guy has made both in his professional and personal life, the lies that he has told over the years, the inability to create anything decent without Axl, kind of changed my outlook on things regarding him. Plus, the new guys (if you can still call them new) in the band have really made it easy for me to move on and not be stuck in the past like you.
I come to GN'R boards to read about the musicians in GN'R, not about the ones who chose to walk away decades ago and the ones ruining the legacy to this day. What do you come to GN'R boards for?

I'm sorry I started this thread but I thought it was in interesting piece of (at first rumor but now confrimed) news even for the non-Slash fans. When I first heard it I came here to just verify it. But I saw nothing posted by FunkyMonkey yet.

Lollapalooza Day 3

3:25 p.m.: Ex-Guns N? Roses guitarist Slash teams with former-Jane?s Addiction frontman (and Lollapalooza mascot) Perry Farrell for a four song mini-set at the Kidz stage.  The pair works through cuts like ?Mountain Song,? ?Jane Says? and ?Knockin? On Heaven?s Door.? But more than the music, it?s Slash?s ever-present cigarette (there?s a positive example for the kids) and Farrell?s ominous song introductions (shades of Patti Smith?s 2006 performance on the same stage) that might have had some parents cringing. ?Life is beautiful,? he says, introducing ?Heaven?s Door.?  ?But the other side of life is death.?

The full songs...

Perry Farrell and Slash - Knockin on Heaven's Door

Perry Farrell and Slash - Superstition

Perry Farrell and Slash - Jane Says

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8y-9tqgKx0

"This is the most people we've ever had at Kidzapalooza," said Hyams after the classic rock session ended, but all he could do was sigh one more warning to everyone to not crush the children and hand over the stage to the main attraction: Perry Farrell and the elusive Slash, who for the next four songs would function as the strangest wedding band/babysitters I've ever seen. Backed by School of Rock kids, they started off with Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," which Farrell introduced by telling the kids that maybe, just maybe, voodoo isn't all that bad after all; frankly, the highlight here was listening to Perry attempting to talk to the kids using some sub-Elmo inflection and a very odd sense of what interests children and/or is appropriate. I'd give anything to have a transcript of how he got from "Superstition" into "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," but all I know is suddenly these kids got a hard lesson in mortality before the funny man with the crazy eyes started singing again. Slash lit up a smoke (despite the pink and purple "No Smoking" signs posted everywhere in Kidzapalooza) and stood almost completely still during his perfunctory performance as Slash, exclamation point! Farrell was his opposite, spidering all over the place, wiry arms outstretched, face spread into a rictus grin. Best intro? "This is a song about a girl named Jane, who grew up, and got real confused." Pause. "You'll probably learn about her later." Pause for parental laughter. "Hopefully you won't be so confused." In the pit, a tiny blond girl with pink and orange streaks in her hair stood, unmoved, just staring at Farrell in that inscrutable way that only tiny children can stare, as the former Jane's Addiction frontman clobbered his old band's best song. Brilliant. Highly recommended.

I just heard that Slash is at Lollapalooza and will appear as a special guest on the KidZ stage. Don't know with who and when and frankly, don't care.
The dude can't stop whoring even when he has nothing to promote......Stalker! Take a vacation or something....it's summer.

There's also strong rumors going around he is filming a piece for and may make an appearance at the VMAs....... Cry

First, thanks to FunkyMonkey for posting photos and videos - good stuff!!

Now, leatherrebel - thank you for making us aware of this, in the first place.  Your sources were correct!  However, why start a thread, if you feel that way?  If you find it interesting and think others might be interested, that's great, but to go on and say that you don't care and the "whoring" BS - then why bother?

I've been a pretty hardcore fan since 1988, and I'm still a Slash fan.  The choices he's made in his life are his.  Beyond that, you are spewing the same unoriginal bullshit that's been said over and over.  He lies.  That's obviously open for a debate which I don't really want to see again.  The inability to create anything decent without Axl?  Again, same unoriginal bullshit.  Why bring Axl up, anyway?  This topic was about Slash, in the first place.  And making that statement is stretching it, because it's an opinion, and it could go either way - if you feel the need to bring Axl into the picture (and there's no need).

I know you were addressing someone else, but I just wanted to say that I come to this board to read about GnR.  Past, present, future.  All inclusive.  That would include Slash.  And you seriously think he's ruining the legacy of GnR?!?   hihi   I would disagree there, and could say a lot more about the legacy of GnR, but this isn't the place.

Again, thanks for starting the topic and making us aware of what might be going on.   ok

Russell Brand mentioned in last weeks podcast that he had been discussing with MTV exec's the promos he was gonna do for the VMAs. They suggested the one with Britney Spears he should have Britney teaching him to dance, Russell said he wanted to have him asking her about child care, but they wouldnt allow him to. Then he mentioned the promo with Slash he wanted to do something about what was under his hat.

Don't know if this has been posted anywhere yet, but since it deals with Slash's performance with Perry Farrell, I figure this should be the place.  I went to check on my fantasy baseball teams on yahoo and one of the featured articles had the caption, "Slash and Brett Favre can do whatever they want".  With a picture of Slash to boot.  Here's the portion of the article containing info about Slash.

Draft Day Dilemma: the Favre problem
By Andy Behrens
Before we get to Favre, there's a quick and unnecessary story. Feel free to skip ahead, past the jump.

Last weekend, we took my seven-year-old to the family stage at Lollapalooza. It was spectacular for various reasons, not the least of which was that my daughter learned exactly what a rock star looks like. She used to think they looked like Nick Jonas, but not anymore.

We have Slash to thank. He and Perry Farrell were the headliners at the kid's stage on Sunday. Slash walked out wearing a hat that said "(expletive)" in large, black letters. He lit a cigarette, then flicked it into the crowd of children at the conclusion of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." A young boy caught it, dropped it when it singed his hand, then picked it up again and screamed excitedly.

Slash was awesome. And the kids seemed to fully appreciate his awesomeness, even though most of them were not yet 10. He just stood there, rocking, smoking, wearing the obscene hat, and a bunch of very small children loved him.

After the set, it seemed necessary to have a brief evils-of-smoking discussion with my daughter, since we'd both just lunged for a discarded cigarette. But she cut me off.

"Duh, he's a rock star. He can do whatever."

There are certain lessons that only Slash can teach your kid, and that's one of them. The rules are very different for rock stars.

Here's the rest of the article, not containing Slash if you're interested.

Shants of "Slash! Slash!" filled the tent until the performers returned to launch into "Jane Says."  But again, the sound system cut out, this time only about 24 bars into the tune.

This time Farrell and friends rolled with it, motioning for the audience to sing along with them.  And they did, turning what would have been a minor disaster into a familial singalong of a classic song, led by its hip-thrusting, arm-waving pied-piper originator.
