The recurring short tune is what i mean. So much emotion and mood with so few chords.Its supernatural how those couple of simple piano chorts can radiate so much oddball hazy decadence:o

If Genesis is referring to the part where Axl re-starts the song (right before Ron does the final guitar solo), why wouldn't you consider that a piano riff?

That part maybe. I was just thinking of the 95% of the rest of the song where the piano is just playing arpeggios and chords that I wouldnt classify as riffage. Genesis didnt specify which part of the song. Either way, I still dont consider it a riff, at least not a momorably brilliant one. Its a genius song, but I dont consider it one with a riffy nature of any kind.
