Fergie delights fans and defies doubters at Pacific

Review: The pop star's lightweight routine had 'em screaming and dancing in the aisles ? but she should keep away from classic-rock.

Not that they got any new material from the pop star, only fast-paced medleys. Paying homage to her launch pad to stardom, she and her break-dancers offered up a whirlwind Black Eyed Peas mix, that included chopped-up bits of "Don't Lie," "Hey Mama," "Shut Up" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Mid-set, after a wardrobe change into painted-on black leather pants, boots and a black T under a turquoise cardigan, she did a fouled-up array of songs that began with an off-key squelch that evolved into Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die," Guns N' Roses-style.

Channeling her inner Axl Rose while twirling around with the mic stand, she then busted into Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." But the mic slipped and hit the stage with a booming thud. She recovered well, though, singing and smiling through the rest of "Black Dog" then quickly moving into "Santeria" by Sublime and finishing off with the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up." Puzzling that a Sublime song would creep into an otherwise classic-rock medley, but the crowd liked it.

Then, out of nowhere, GNR guitarist Slash appeared ? and no one clapped for him. It was either a case of "no, is it?" or "who is that dude with the top hat?" Fergie introduced him: "some of you little ones may know him from "Guitar Hero," but I know him from a band called Velvet Revolver and a band called Guns N' (bleeping) Roses!"

The duo did GNR's "Sweet Child o' Mine" and Heart's "Barracuda," both "Guitar Hero" staples. At the end of the latter track Fergie did numerous one-handed cartwheels, mic in hand, while singing the last high note of the song ? I counted four cartwheels but started to get dizzy. Despite the acrobatics, Fergie should stick to doing what Fergie does best ? pop-tart tunes ? and stay away from rock.

Okay, the solo was great, he went old school, no wah.  But what happened to his sound?  You couldn't hear the very end of the solo.  Still a cool performance.

that said her voice doesn't really suit the song at all, would be nice to hear him play with someone who can sing it properly again, and also play it with wah.
