Rock Band 2: GNR Hands-On
We take Axl & company's new song for a test drive.

by Hilary Goldstein

September 12, 2008 - Guns 'n Roses grabbed the music world by the balls with their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, and then gave those balls a gentle squeeze with the two-disc follow-up Use Your Illusion. GNR was a band overloaded with talent and ego, the latter of which caused a split that would have seemed to mean the premature end to one of the great rock bands of the past 20 years. Somehow, Axl Rose and the GNR name survived. For more than a decade GNR has been working on "Chinese Democracy," an album that could help the group regain its mantle as one of the kings of rock 'n' roll.

It's been rumored that GNR has written more than 100 songs for consideration on the album -- an album that with each passing year seems less and less likely to be released. But it appears "Chinese Democracy" may yet see the light of day. And the strongest evidence is that the first GNR single in a long, long time has made its debut? in a videogame.

While most of the 84 tracks on Rock Band 2 are previously released ditties, "Shackler's Revenge" is brand new from Guns 'n Roses. Forget the GNR you remember from when you were in high school. "Shackler's Revenge" is a brooding, industrial riff with a catchy chorus and only a hint of Axl's classic high-pitched vocals that gets buried at times under heavy distortion. Once you get past the first 30 seconds, "Shackler's Revenge" picks up quite a bit, with one good hook that will keep it bouncing around in your head for at least a couple of weeks.

Everyone wants to know if the new GNR song is any good. I would say that it's an acquired taste and that the opening half-minute feels a tad self-indulgent. But the song gets better from that point. The more I listen (and play) "Shackler's Revenge" the more it grows on me. Plenty will be turned off by the fact that this doesn't sound at all like classic GNR, but if you want a classic, just go buy Appetite for Destruction. This is the new Guns 'n Roses, deal with it or get off the planet.

I like the last part if you want classic Guns go buy AFD lol ... that's the thing that makes me mad is that my friends who are GnR fan's go " Well it doesn't sound like GnR"  " I want real music that doesn't sound like a machine made it "  " too much pro tools"  I hope they swallow their words sunday.  All though we did see Guns live and they liked Better.

I would love to buy a CD single of "Shackler's Revenge".

It would be awesome! peace
We all would. Fuck iTunes, I want something physical.
I would buy it off itunes at midnight, then buy the proper cd single at 9 am the next day !

Thanks jarmo old boy !

I probably would too, but I'm just not a fan of buying MP3s. Something feels...missing, when you just get a computer file instead of a jewel case and a booklet.

Plus, my computer is prone to a lot of viruses...I'd lose a lot of money in songs. rofl

To me 'an appetizer' after all this time isn't so great, let alone something to be grateful for.

Of course not.

Your favorite band puts out a new song. Fuck that.

Let's go back to 2005 when things were exciting and happening.  Roll Eyes

Stop being so fucking self centered for once.

Jarmo, really, I've told you this before: lighten up. No matter what anybody says that is a little negative on the band, even if those people were very positive in a number of posts about the band, you can't help yourself but to react so hostile. People just tell how they feel, it's an opinion - something to respect! I truly wonder how you are doing. Do you manage to have an healthy opinion on other matters? Needless to say, you've lost it quite a bit regarding Guns.

Still hoping for a download/cd single - as do a lot of other fans!

Here's the ROX OFF review..  Smiley

Sweet Revenge

Rating: **** (4 of 5)

Track: Shackler's Revenge
Band: Guns N' Roses
Source: Rock Band 2 (playlist)

Who's Shackler? We don't know either but he'll have his revenge soon, as Guns N' Roses air out some clean laundry from their mythic and forever unreleased album Chinese Democracy. Forget the dirty laundry (the demos, the leaks, the fakes) - this is the real deal.

A new, official and soon to be released track that will be tied to the Rock Band 2 videogame (MTV/Harmonix) being unleashed in September for the Xbox and in December for the PS3 and Wii platforms.

We've heard it. The verdict? Oh man.

"I've got an itchy finger and there'll be hell to pay," scowls Axl Rose in a baritonish chant, but he needn't fret or lose sleep anymore; his vocal cadence commanders this grinding disco anthem like General Patton driving his tank through a Sicilian village.

Shackler's Revenge harks back nine years to that lone other nu-GnR song, the pummeling Oh My God from the Arnold Schwarzenegger bomb End of Days - only the grime and distortion has now been replaced by in-your-face hooks, assaultive choruses and a front and center swooping drumbeat. Unshakable and uncompromising industrial blast rock for the dance floor.

Some GnR diehards will scream bloody murder but even the sleaziest Sunset stripper won't be able to sit still to the infectious groove of this Frankenrawk.

It sounds effortless, almost rushed, and it'll be fun to survey how every lyric, riff and loop will be scrutinized by the mainstream media, critics and crazy fans to the point of madness. If anything was ever a no win situation it's Rose and his next album. Only the masturbatory midsong solo by Buckethead (or is that Bumblefoot?) seems jaded - but good luck keeping up with it in the game, kids!

Guitar gymnastics aside, Revenge is a charging slice of Rob Zombified disco n' roll in GnR clothing and with a red bandana. A fist in the face of expectations and doomy naysayers; all waiting, teeth glaring, in the lobby of the jungle for the Lion King and his comrades to finally emerge from the shadows with that damn Democracy.

Hey, Joe Public probably won't even recognize this as Guns N' Roses.

Maybe that was Axl's plan all along.

Revenge can be sweet.

Hello?

You're the one who tries to bring down the excitement.

It's so fucking boring to see a few select fans try to bring everybody down a few days before we have a NEW SONG officially out!

Damn right, I'll make sure you understand what the hell you're doing and hold you responsible.

Does it suck that somebody questions you? Does it suck that you have to answer for what you're trying to do and say?

You're the one who thinks it basically sucks that there's a new song coming. You're not grateful.

For years and years I've seen the posts. Release a song, release this, release that.

Now we're there. We have a new song coming and you got the fucking nerve to whine about it?

What a bunch of bullshit!

They have a new song coming in a few days. And some "fans" think it's nothing?
