Okay, you are right about the atomic clock. However, didn't the mayan's first learn of the earth rotation not always being 365 days and we just made it simple by creating a "leap year".  Thanks for clarifying the others though.

It just so happens that if you try to sync up our Gregorian calendar with their calendar, this date is the next point at which they sync.

But you reminded me of a recorded lecture I had seen given by Richard Feynman.  He was fascinated by the Mayan calendar and he talks about the priests who thought of Earth's precession as a 'numbers game' but not understanding why it was happening.  I'll have to find the link and post it.  He is always a great lecturer to watch and learn from.

As far as I know, that's a point that's up for debate.  It doesn't seem to be well documented.

This 2012 shit is actually a little scary. I've just recently started researching a little into it, though I still don't know much about it. From what I've read, though, I don't really think that the Mayans predicted that the world would end on that date, that's just the date their calendar ends. People misinterpret that as their prediction for the end of life, but many say that the Mayan calendar then starts over. The Mayans were pretty frickin' smart, though, and supposedly they've already predicted some things right. There's some weird astrological thing that's going to happen on Dec. 21, 2012. Certain planets or galaxies or some shit align just perfectly on that day, so something weird is going to happen. I don't think it'll be the end of life, but hell, who knows . . .
