I don't think this is a ranking of any kind, just a list:

http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/listoftheday/69730/the-25-best-heavy-metal-bands

Apologies if this is a better fit for "Bad Obsession."

Indeed.  I think the writer agrees, since they used a GN'R pic for the story from the main page.   beer

It's nice to see Guns N' Roses on the list. They should be number 1. Some of the other bands I did not think would make the list.

Exactly. Guns (new and old) is essentially a hard rock band with some heavy metal, punk, blues, pop (in a good "Elton John" sense... NOT Backstreet Boys), industrial (particularly new band) undertones/influences IMHO. Charting #18 on a list apparently for "heavy metal" acts is not a bad showing at all...

GNR is everything.. like Mao Axl said. Appetite had alot of Metal elements, and so did some of the UyI songs.. And back in the days (and still) GNR will have its space under the metal umbrella.

There's no question that GNR have SOME metal tendencies, but I think they're certainly a small minority, when compared with their blues rock tendencies.

But the real point is that the douche who made the list knows nothing of metal.  AC/DC?!?!?!  I LOVE AC/DC...but that is NOT a metal band!  If anything, they're more purely blues rock than GNR.

A real list of METAL bands would probably have Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden at the top.  It MIGHT include Zeppelin, because of their overall heaviness and influence on the genre.  It MIGHT include some proto-metal bands like Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, etc.

But mostly...well, it would be bands that made an impact playing JUST metal.  Death, Bathory, Slayer, Opeth...I'm not expert enough to create the list, but I think those bands would make a good start.

I agree that GNR is more of a hard rock band than a metal band... that said, if they're including Rush on the list, GNR should be ahead of them.  I don't care how good Neil Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are as musicians, GNR is 10 times the band they are.  And to have Spinal Tap ahead of them?  I love Spinal Tap, own the collectors addition DVD, but come on.

P.S. Megadeth should be on the list.  Rust in Peace is a masterpiece and the 3 albums before that (Killing is my Business, Peace Sells, So Far So Good So What) are all good as well.

The guy who wrote the article must have been a Poison fan growing up

I belive the reason it ok to put GNR on a heavy metal list, is because thay are some kind of havy metal. I agree.. GnR is alot of things.. just take a look at theyr discography.
You get everything from the purest Rock n roll song, too the more hevy stuff like You could be mine, Right next door to hell, back off bitch, nightrain etc. Then we have the rock n roll ballades.. November Rain etc.. and Industrual.. My World.. silkworms and other newGNR songs.

But. I remember back in the days.. in the early mid 90s.. GnR was always concidered one of the really heavy bands.. if not the music style, thay had a "heavy attitude" that put them on the "Hard side of music". The reason for this, may be that there were so many "hard rock puddle bands", and GnR Was something in between them, and heavy metal. I see nothing wrong on them beeing on this list.

BUT that been said.. this list still sucks... pronto

If you spend too much time trying to label whats rock vs. metal you'll drive yourself crazy.  It means nothing as do these lists.

It IS a very good album...I don't dispute that.  But it has so many taproots in Sabbath Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (and others)...it wouldn't have existed in nearly the same fashion without working through that experimentation with Sabbath (IMO).

a lot of those bands on that list aren't even heavy metal

Gn'R are classified as rock n roll, or heavy rock or even classic rock

no metal to it... i had that
