Here Today...

« on: June 19, 2008, 06:11:52 PM »

Does anyone have any record stores or just strictly music stores open near them anymore? I am quite sad because this hella old record store that sold rarities and new stuff has just closed. Virgin closed and so did oh shit the big chain Tower Records. They might still be open in the city crying but I don't live there anymore so I have to go to best buy, target, walmart, etc.. to get my shit. It kind of makes me sad. Just wondering if music stores across the world are doing the same thing?

There's a street in London, Berwick Street, which has long housed some of the best record shops.  I used to wander down there and there'd be at least 6 to go into including second hand ones/ great ones for rarities, cheap cds, great vinyl etc - there's only 2 or 3 now and they have all changed a lot.  The others were bought out or had to close down, which was so sad as they were a London staple for the avid music fan.

seems its happening in many places prob coz of vast availability of music online and the popularity of mp3 players etc.  I miss trudging around record shops.  still love my vinyl though and wont be shelving my record player for anything. Chineses Dem better be released on vinyl!

There's still a few record shops around where I live (Minneapolis/St. Paul).  In fact, my buddy runs a great record shop called Eclipse Records (http://www.pulsetc.com/article.php?sid=3061 - Check it out if you're in the area  ok)    They are all small independent shops though, and many of them double as head shops (or perhaps they are head shops doubling as record stores).   I still don't mind paying the extra buck or two to shop at them.

Remember Sun Records Downtown??   They never sold any music, but all T shirts and memorabilia....the old chinese guy who ran it would never let you leave without buying something. Too bad it closed.

Yeah, a lot of the independent stores have had to close down to not go bankrupt in competition from the big chains.
