slash fans unite!   the only way to defend your super cool hero is to diss Axl.

Nothing against Axl Rose, actually I am Axl 's fan too. I'v been around GNR world since early days and I am probably  much fan than you of Axl Rose, what piss me off is some of new Axl's supporters (as you for example) are constantly thrashing Slash for any reason. It's Slash for God's sake!!

You are correct, but he did lay down some lines with GNR back in 1999.  This is fact.  Shaq and Axl...
That is fiction. This is fact.

There are rumors that Shaq- Shaquille O'Neal rapped on the album at Axl's request.

Dizzy: I don't know if anything's happened since... but I jammed with Shaq.  At one point I was down at this rehearsal... this rehearsal place in Santa Monica writing songs with Paul [Tobias].  And my friend Syd was playing drums- just drumming for us.  We were basically just writing and recording stuff- writing and recording constantly, just basically waiting for everyone else to basically show up. And there are these satellite recording studios around that soundstage and they do a lot of commercials and back when Shaq was still with the Orlando Magic- he was doing a Taco Bell commercial next door so he heard that we were next door so he wanted to come say hi... but there like the only one there is Dizzy so he says 'well, I'll say hi to Dizzy' so the door opens and this gigantic man comes in and I'm like 'who the hell's that?' and he's like 'hey dizzy!' and he's getting closer and closer and bigger and bigger- I realize its fuckin' Shaquille O'Neal. Holy shit.  So.. we talked for a little bit and then he asked me to play my keyboard and I said 'sure' and he sat down and disintegrated my stool... smashed it into little pieces [everyone laughs]... granted shaking Shaq's hand is like shaking a frying pan [I ask what that means] ... well.. I mean its so big [Dizzy shows how difficult it would be to shake a frying pan] Anyway, so he breaks my stool into little pieces and he looks at me and goes 'man, I broke Guns N' Roses' stool.' And I say 'yea, we'll send you a bill for that later' and he doesn't say anything and so I'm like "just kidding..." And so we got him another stool and he sits down and starts playing this... polysynth [?] sound... this riff on my keyboards... and it was really cool.  And so... I look over at the drummer and motion for him to.. you know... get a hiphop beat going... and Syd goes into this groove... and Shaq started vibin' on it and Paul started playing guitar... and Shaq looks over at me... and like this magic thing happened- he says 'take over' and so I watch what he's playing and I sat down and started playing it. And he got this groove- this vibe going and he and his buddies grabbed the mic and started doing this rap.  And our engineer Tommy was rolling tape the entire time... so... and I mean it was really cool... I mean the time he was just joking around and they started dancing and they danced their way out of the studio and we kept playing the beat 'cause it was cool and they came back in, sort of like an encore, and did some more stuff. like Shaq started doing the worm- I mean if you've ever seen a 7 foot... 300 pound guy do the worm... its the most amazing thing.  And they bailed.  It was the most amazing thing. And I mean I don't know if anything's happened since then but that's probably where that story comes from.
so, it wasn't in 99 and it wasn't with axl, more like 95 with syd  smoking

let's move on topic shall we

rofl rofl rofl  good find...   Rap in GNR haven't been too far apart..  Axl loved NWA and he did a little rap during Rocket Queen live.

What about Alice Cooper, Ozzy, etc.  Are they not idols?

Hence why I didn't list them in the same breath as Pussycat Dolls or Fergie.

How do you mean by "glory days"?   Remember, contraband debuted at number ONE and was very successful.
It would seem like he has achieved a lot since Guns.

Yet here he is covering GN'R and not one from the glory days of VR...  Tongue

Well in fairness, i don't think anyone has ever re-released something they only put out in the last couple of years.   Smiley  whereas PC is older.
Slash knows he'll never live down Guns.  He knows he will never achieve what he did back then either. None of them will.

So i guess he may as well just roll with it

"covering" is when you perfom a song of somebody else. Is Slash really covering a song which himself wrote? It's quite subjective that. For example, if tomorrow Slash perform "Coma" or "WTTJ" on a stage, is he covering those songs? I don't think so...

Maybe Slash isn't, but Cypress Hill certainly is.  And not doing it justice in my eyes either.  Once again, therein lies the problem for me.  If he wanted to record Paradise City with a Steven Tyler or a Robert Plant, fine.  But Cypress Hill?  Come now, is there really any demand whatsoever for something like that?

Probably not. But re-recording with another rock artist is just the same thing again isn't it? This is something different, which is what I think is the effect he is aiming for.

Don't think anyone could have said it better  Smiley

Sure, id hate to see an album full of GNR covers but its just a B-side that most people will not hear or ever care for.

This is from Slash's twitter on the 21st of July 2009:

"Recording vocals today for the ONE cover song on the record"

Perhaps PC might be on the album, but i doubt it

Jarmo,

They are his songs too. He should be allowed to play them. Its not hanging on to your glory days. He's partly responsible for creating those classics. Shouldnt he have the right to play them? By your logic Chris Cornell shouldnt be allowed to play any Soundgarden songs either?

IMO, having all different kinds of singers on the one album is a good thing. Probably just means he has a wide tatse, or at least wants to try out new things. Should be interesting to hear lots of different styles, some of which each person will prefer over the others.

Pop singers?! OMFG. Tongue

Would of been cool if Slash had gotten Prince to work with him on a song XD

Now that would be worth the money. Not fucking whatever her douche name is from Pussycat Dolls.

If Slash wants to get a female pop singer, get Joss Stone. Shes actually a good singer and makes good music (generally). Her new albums got Jeff Beck on it.

Whos more credible, Fergie, some bimbo who whitens her teeth daily and is in one of the worst pop groups of all time "Black Eyed Peas"?

Why wouldn't you care about someone who helped hugely to create something so special?
Guns may have never made it minus Slash, then you wouldnt of being a fan of Axl at all  ok

If he is SO irrelevant, why are they still playing his riffs and songs he helped to create?

Actually, I love hearing Slash PLAY the GN'R songs because I love hearing his lead guitar work.  But, playing them and re-recording them with a hip-hop twist or with a pop singer doing lead vocals is different.  Honestly, if it was a more faithful version, true to the spirit and energy of the original, I'd want to hear it.  That's why I was always curious to hear the new GN'R's take on Appetite.  They always play those songs with tremendous reverence and energy.

Wait, how is the fact that Slash hasn't been in GNR since 1996 relevant at all to this?? How did that argument even make its way in here?? Huh

Maybe we should wait until we hear anything to dismiss it as trash, and when it is released listen to it with open ears and open minds, (no expectations as to what we WANT to hear just hearing what it is). I mean sure on paper a pussycat doll or fergie doesn't seem like a logical choice but just because their main musical act is lame pop doesn't mean everything they do is going to be lame pop, people are multi-faceted and maybe artists like the pussycat doll or fergie just haven't met surrrounding musicians who can bring the good out, or write songs that rock, or aren't "lame". I mean if we just looked at Robert Plant we wouldn't have expected him to come out with a country album with Alisson Krauss. Or even the opposite, for all these years Slash has always been in hard rock bands and maybe playing with these people he can write songs that aren't as heavy, just because they aren't straight up rock songs doesn't mean they aren't good other genres contain good music, and just because the majority of hip hop, and pop songs aren't that appealing doesn't mean they all suck, thats over generalizing, closed minded, ignorence, that applies everywhere, even in where slash/duff/izzy fans don't like Chinese Democracy because it doesn't sound exactly like how the "old" guns sounded, if they listened to it with open ears they would realize its a damn good record, i have the same opinion with libertad, even though its not the same as Contraband, if you listen to it not expecting that its pretty good (though mixed poorly).I would love to see a message board where Slash would come on and criticize every move that we make, saying we sold out in our daily lives, in our posts, the people we hang out with or whatever, It would be hilarious to see everyone else being in his shoes, oh wait no one does anything remotley worthyy of being criticized like everyone on here does to him.
Would of been cool if Slash had gotten Prince to work with him on a song

Agreed
