Spiraling up through the crack in the skye...

« on: June 09, 2008, 11:31:46 AM »

I am going to SF next month for a working vacation.  Anyone here from SF or has anyone travelled there before and have some tips on what to do?  Where to eat?  How to find some green?  What to avoid?

Thanks.

One of my favorite cities.

Be sure to stretch your calves well each morning.

Bring a sweater too.

Fishermans Wharf and Peir 39 is a good place to start.  Its close to North Beach and Chinatown, both really cool places to check out.  Then there is Goldengate Park and haight-ashbury.  The city itself isnt very big, so depending on how much time ya got, you should be able to see everything. I went last year for the first time and fell in love with the city. Cant wait to go back.

Frisco is really cool.

Ghiradelli Square, which is practically in the Fishermans Wharf, is really nice.

Check and see if there are any concerts at the Fillmore or the Warfield. Both really cool places to see a show.

Be sure to check out Muir Woods, that place is absolutely beautiful, and has the biggest trees I've ever seen in my life.

Sausalito is a really cool little town just over the Golden Gate bridge, they have some really nice restaurants right down on the water.

If you're looking for a nice classy one, the Spinaker was pretty cool.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I have been checking Poolstar for concerts but not much in going on in mid July.  Unfortunately, STP plays the day after I am leaving.

How are the local microbreweries?

Is the Alcatraz tour cool or not worth the effort?

The Alcatraz cruise is worth it,. Make sure you book the tickets with a day in advance. When I was there last year we wanted to go but the last cruise it's at 2 or 3 pm. We wanted to book for the follwing day but all tickets were sold out. We got in though since we sorta got along well with somebody from the crew and we did the first cruise next morning at 730 am. It was fun...

Golden Gate is awesome too. We walked from pier 39 (that is where the cruise to alcatraz leaves) to the Golden Gate and crossed it. That's more or less 10-12 miles. It's a beautiful walk though...highly recommended.

Chinatown and north beach are also cool...there are cool restuarants in north beach. There's also the best breakfast there. Go to a place called "mama's" and you'd eat the best omelette and pan cakes ever! It's a small restaurant but always packed. You have to que at least 20 to 30 minutes but it's all worth it.

The Marina is also nice. We had a walked there on a sunday mid afternoon and the vibe was awesome.

You also have Union Square for shopping and things like that.

SF is the most amazing city in US. I'd definitely live there. Quite a joyride.

.......and if you see a sign that says "welcome to Oakland" turn around really quick hihi

San Fran is really cool. There are alot of great places to eat, but do yourself a favor and go to In N Out at least once for a burger. I'm seriously thinking of flying to San Diego for a double double

And after your trip listen to the  Chris Robinson song "If You See California" it will stick with you.

I agree 110%. Sausalito seems to get  more sunshine than the bay area too. So you can go across that bridge over into this wonderful light filled bay with sailboats everywhere. It is absolutely gorgeous. You can make the woods and Sausalito a great day trip IMO.

There is a cool Japanese tea garden in the city that I recommend, very chill.

I also really liked the Rose Garden at Golden Gate Park.

I had been there a few times and almost moved before I met my future Missus. We spent our honeymoon there-9 days-and sometimes still toy with moving out there. It's a toughy, so much of a trade off.

Chinatown is good for cheap eats, relatively speaking. And for my money, I love Berekely, which has great food and great vibe. A blast from the past if you will. So much to do and see...I used to live there and regret nothing.
