what goes on with her? I remember a few years ago she said someone had stolen all of Frances Bean's money, or something like that-does she watch who she lets in the house? Weird

You'd think she'd keep them in a safe or something.
Maybe she misplaced them during a drugged out haze?

Yeah true, Cobain was a great songwriter and a good guitarist. Sucks how it all went down and how now this has happened!

what did he actually stand for? just curious
all ive ever read or seen is him ripping on other bands because he thinks they are commercial or can play guitar too good.
like his various complaints about guns n roses.

true...as far as I remember...Nirvana made music videos and went to the MTV awards several times....Kurt was not the martyr that people try to make him out to be....I like Nirvana...but they were an above average band....not phenomenal...or even revolutionary....what did they revolutionize? Rap and Hip Hop took over the charts for a decade after Nirvana came out....

like his various complaints about guns n roses.
Firstly,
he stood for artistic voice
. Even though a ton of record executives were pressuring him to make another album in the same vein as "Nevermind", he refused. He was tired of seeing yuppy assholes in their Volvos singing along to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. It's like when people sing along to Guns N' Roses songs and think they're happy songs, ie: 'Paradise City'. The song is about despiration and crawling up out of the gutter for a chance at the big time only to find out it's all a joke. Then he/Nirvana made "In Utero" which is one of the most raucous, gritty albums in history. Pure punk rock. He said 'fuck you' to the people who sang along to "Nevermind" and the record executives trying to tell him what he needed to do. What people, ie: Courtney Love and others have been doing since then is using Cobain's legacy for a quick buck. Institutionalizing him and making him a "figure". Even though he's reached an iconic status, he never wanted that. He was just a 'guy who made music'.
Secondly, even though I'll be first to admit Nirvana isn't the best band interms of musical prowess, the band furthered the grunge movement and more than anything represented that no matter what,
the human spirit will triumph
. Kurt was a great songwriter, even if a bit weird and he put his entire being into his music. Listen to "In Utero", it's basically him committing suicide on audio. It's really deep stuff. So what this is doing and what others have been doing for awhile is making his life (and death) a public spectacle. It's belittling the values and morals that he stood for. Values like love and friendliness, the acceptance of alternate lifestyles, the distaste for the corporate America that dominates the world today, and a concern for the common man. Kurt had an incredibly difficult life but even in death, he gets no rest.
I think it was David Fricke who said it once: "It's a beautiful story, but it's got a tragic ending".

My issue here is, you say he stood for artistic voice, which is a good thing to stand up for. However in the process why did he rip on a bunch of other bands n say they made shitty music n stuff, criticizing their art, i just find that hypocritical.

Hypocrisy is subjective? Maybe, he thought most of the the other rockers were a bunch of turds(a view that I share).

for making good music?
Its opinion, i dont like him because he preached his own opinion to the retarded masses that were up his arse so they did what he said because they thought it was "cool". He wouldnt be the icon he is if he hadnt of died. The band probably would of faded out like most bands. If you go listen to the youtube clips of him talkin bout guns n roses some of the things he says he takes so out of context, it was rather annoying to listen to (when you know the facts) and then see all the people commenting below agreeing with him.
He moaned about many bands, even ones apart of the "grunge" scene like pearl jam.

What annoys me about him is that everyone loves to say how he hated the attention of the masses and how he wasn't in it for the fame etc. Well, he could have stopped making music. He could have made music and not given interviews, done photoshoots, gone on tour. If it really bothered him, he could have bought himself out of any contracts or simply ignored them and faced the consequences. But he didn't. He was a media whore and loved the attention.

We've all done things that are contradictory or negative at times. Kurt ripped on Gn'R because of what they stood for (according to Kurt): huge productions, rock n' roll excess, and sweltered egos.
It was a dick thing for him to do, considering he didn't know them personally, but I guess after rumors of a Nirvana/Gn'R tour...he wanted to distance himself from that. The whole
well-produced album thing and anything that would make Nirvana anymore popular. He hated stadium tours, for example. It was his own belief, not mine, I still think you can have a
great show at a big venue, but I understand where he was coming from. Axl was a big fan of Nirvana and actually liked what they stood for, but I guess that Axl felt rejected and angry
when Kurt fired back in such a hostile way. Thus the feud began.

I don't necessarily agree with what he said about GNR but musicians rip on other bands all the time. "Bon Jovi can suck my dick" and all that...
Quote from: JimBobTTD on June 03, 2008, 09:12:11 AM
He could have made music and not given interviews, done photoshoots, gone on tour.
I think after a while, it was left up to Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl to do interviews 'cos Kurt didn't turn up.
Anyway, having your ashes stolen is pretty shitty, no matter what you once said about GNR. Though I might bid on those mysterious ashes on eBay....
