Duff McKagan's "Who's to Blame"
«

In his unreleased album "Beautiful Disease" (from 1999) there's a song called "Who's To Blame" wich, in Duff words: "It's about the breakup of guns." What do u think about it? or 'bout the lyrics? Though that maybe this is the first impression of the "breakup" of Gn'r from Duff (at least "musical impression") 'coz maybe thsi song was written the year after he left Gn'r... also interesting that he talked about "a breakup" of Gn'R not about he leaving the band... what do u think? Here are the lyrics... (though is a cool song)
Duff McKagan
Who's To Blame
What did I do today?
Some people think I went and threw it away
But that was yesterday
I can't remember much of that anyway
I wonder who's to blame?
Or does it really matter much anyway
Or if we stayed the same?
If anyone of us would be here today ... yeah
I don't care about it anymore, so tired
of thinking it through
I don't care about it anymore, who's to
blame me or you?
I had so much fun, was going to live so fast
and die very young
But I was 21, i'm so glad i'm here to sing this song ... yeah
I wonder who's to blame?
Or does it really matter much anyway?
Or if we stayed the same?
If anyone of us would be here today ... yeah
I don't care about it anymore, so tired of
thinking it through
I don't care about it anymore, who's to
blame me or you?
I don't care about it anymore. So tired of
thinking it through
I don't care about it anymore, who's to
blame me or you?

I think that Duff has a good perspective on things. He doesn't seem to blaming Axl completely like Slash has done time and again. He at least seems open to the possibility that there were multiple factors at play.

Yeah, U're right... I think the song critices the common place of lookin' one to blame... n' how stupid is it... "who's to blame me or you? I don't care about it anymore..."

wow good catch...sounds like it is
i think this song from 5 O'Clock is about Axl
Quote
What do you want to be - (Slash/Matt Sorum/Eric Dover)
Sour, this affliction
If it was me i'd have it fixed
And with everywhere you've been
You're much too old to be so naive
So what the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
I can't stand the parties you attend
So what the hell do you want with me
Oh, you're so underground
Oh, ain't that swell
Well the word is on the street
You're collecting sympathy and
then you hide
And ya ain't been out in days
Will the sunshine burn your face
Preserve your precious skin
I'll go out, you stay in
What the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
I can't stand the parties you attend
So what the hell do you want with me
Please don't feed the pigeons
Out of the same sad bag of trcks
I've heard it all a million times
You make me sicker than
the wine you drink
So if you think I need some help
Climb out of your own shell
It'll make you think
So what the hell do you want to be
Following the trends that never end
Why is it that I can't
stand your friends
So what the hell do you want with me
What the hell do you want to be
Following fashion in the sheets
Chasing every other flavor
of the week
So what the hell do you want from me
What do you want to be
Looking for anyone who's somebody

Did Slash write the lyrics for that song? If so, I don't see how Axl follows trends. That's bullshit.

I seem to recall Zakk Wylde saying that Axl was obsessed with following musical trends.

we prolly shouldnt get into it in this section
but the rumors of the industrial influenced 2000 intentions with Chris Vrenna and Robin Finck and OMG spawning from that era....then there was Axl's fascination with Hip Hop in the 90s and the subsequent Nirvana/Grunge movement, which rumors say axl was also into until Cobain reportedly turned down the offer to open for guns

yeah there was an interview with him that said that Axl wanted to do something like Pearl Jam was doing
anyway slash talks about 5 O'Clock in his book and he mentions some stuff..i've thought that song was about Axl for a while...slash book kinda confirmed it for me though he never out and out specifically named it.

Listen to the new tracks. They say otherwise. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

i didnt mean to run your thread off topic..
i just thought that i'd post what i felt was another ex gnr members version of that particular time frame
considering that Slash had songs about it in 95 and duff had songs about it in 99...you could say they have moved on, and i consider the band to have broken up considering there was only one orig member left....as for axl carrying on the name whatever he has the rights to it so he can do whatever he wants

That's O.K. man
just the difference is that Duff was explicit saying that the song was about "the breakup of guns", n' 'bout the sankepit song we could just especulate...

Yes, they did. Slash confirms it in his book and says some of the lyrics were bitter and directed at Axl.

as for why he directed the lyrics at axl...things were falling apart at the seams man...anyway he talks about it in depth in his book

I'm pretty sure the Snakepit music was written for GNR, without lyrics. Slash went back and did those after Axl rejected it. I think that was in the book but don't have it in front of me. Someone correct me if I'm totally off base there.

Yeah that's true. Some of the songs on Snakepit's first cd were Gn'R roughs.
Like the guitars... so that is what Slash wanted Gn'R to sound like, and I would of loved to hear that too!
